Today was our best day trip in Japan so far! We got to try making Bizen pottery, check out Japan’s largest candy/dagashi store, and see Japan’s oldest public school. It was the perfect day touring around the countryside in Okayama prefecture. Thank you so much to the students at the Okayama Prefectural University for taking us on this incredible trip.

The pottery we made, Bizen-yaki (備前焼) has a history of more than 1,000 years, which makes it one of the oldest pottery making techniques in Japan! Bizen ware has a unique manufacturing method as it does not use glaze and the lack of luster gives a simple, rustic appearance. It is a Okayama speciality. We won’t get our finished product for 3-5 months 😅

The school we went to, Shizutani (閑谷学校 )was built in 1670 and was designated as a Japan Heritage site in 2015. The school was open not only to the samurai class but also to commoners, which was revolutionary at that time. All the ceramics used for the roof tiles are Bizen pottery!
