People often ask me how to choose travel destinations. Deciding where to travel can be overwhelming once you realize you basically have a whole planet open to you (almost).
Traveling long term makes it even harder, because there’s just no way to plan ahead. Long term travel requires a lot of “we’ll see when we get there!”
So, how do you choose where to travel?
I use three primary factors: costs, weather, and suggestions.
When deciding where to travel, I first consider where I can AFFORD to go. I’d love to go climbing in Norway, hiking in Switzerland, and boating through the Caribbean, but I can’t necessarily afford all of that. In fact, earlier this year I completely trashed my plans to continue traveling long term in Europe because I wanted to travel even longer, but was running out of money far too fast. Now, I’m in southeast Asia.
Choosing where to travel based on budget is made much easier with Google Flights’s ‘Explore’ feature. Using this, you can search flight costs around the globe all at one time! I use Google Flights every time I plan a new destination.
The second factor I think about when deciding where to travel is the weather. I do not like to be cold! I might find a low-cost destination, but if it’s too cold, I’ll be miserable! Since you have the world at your disposal, you can be picky about what climate you head into.
The third thing that plays a huge role when deciding where to travel is other people’s suggestions. It’s true, some suggestions are horrible. However, most travelers I’ve met have given me wonderful suggestions of where to go! As you travel, you meet other travelers who have been to some of the same places you’re thinking of going. Ask where they’ve been and what they loved. You can also use Tripadvisor, blogs, and YouTube to get other suggestions on where to travel (although all suggestions should be taken with a grain of salt).

Thank you for this, I have found it really useful. For about 2 years now I have overthought where I am going to go. I know I want to go away for a long time and I know I don't have much money – the stress of planning it all out has resulted in paralysis by analysis! But you've simplified it here in a really great way, so thank you for that!
