Set within the northern lowlands of Costa Rica, the Arenal Volcano has had a powerful influence over the surrounding area. Over the last hundred years it has greatly affected the landscape, people, and industry of this region. The volcano’s influence continues on unabated today.

Prior to 1968, the Arenal Volcano was quiet and covered in jungle. It hadn’t erupted in some 400 years. One fateful day in July of 1968, however, the volcano exploded and changed everything. Three villages were buried and 87 people were killed. Crops were destroyed and property was ruined.

Between 1968 and 2010, the Arenal Volcano remained very active—it spewed hot rocks, ash and lava almost daily. The fiery explosions were remarkable and drew flocks of travelers from around the world.

As Hector mentions in the video, backpackers began arriving in the 1990s and were soon followed by other tourists. Tourism quickly became the region’s dominant industry. People traveled here not only to see the volcano, but also to hike in rainforests and soak in hot springs. These activities are still very popular today.

The Arenal Volcano, however, entered another resting phase in 2010 and all volcanic activity has ceased. Despite the lack of lava, this is still a spectacular place to visit. The outdoor offerings are incredible (think rainforests, waterfalls, lakes, and rivers) and the activities are exciting.
