Today Thuong is trying her first ever e-bike MTB! Actually, today we are attending a local gravel ride demo day and are going to try out a bunch of new bikes, many of which are a first for her (gravel bikes, mountain bikes, full suspension, cyclocross, steel bikes and more).

The event “OUTDOOR & BIKE” was held very near our home in Nisshin, Japan at Aichi Bokujo (farm), which is also the host venue for one of the best cyclocross races in Japan.

Here is a video I made about the course and race:

What bikes should I have Thuong ride next?

  1. wtf is that little triangle bike omg do an entire video on that. THIS IS THE WEIRDEST BIKE IN THE WORLD๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒŽ

  2. Surly make an awesome bike if you want a touring bike that is strong and can haul a lot of weight. But, it is not light or fast. I love my Troll. But, if I just want to ride fast I take my Trek. That kabob reminded me of a burrito or taco.

  3. When I studied in Japan, I got a mamachari at a scrapyard for like 1200 yen and for whatever reason I fell in love with biking in Japan so much, that I got myself a singlespeed bike with drop bars (in a second hand facebook group ind my area) and drove all over Japan with it.
Nowadays, I am riding everyday. Still got a singlespeed and use it for shorter commute. Had a mt bike but ditched it for a road/gravel bike now. It is more fun riding longer distances for me. And if I want to make a weekend trip, I swap the 28c tyres with some 32c tyres and enjoy the comfort.
Watching your channel really brings out those good memories. Thinking about going back to Japan 2020 with my gravel-setup bike and traveling to various places with great onsen ๐Ÿ˜€

Keep up the good vids and its really nice to see how much fun your wife has to exp these new bikes with you (and food) ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. i really liked this video. i liked how Thoung was test driving them and giving her feelings on it and comparing the bikes at a comfort/commuter type thinking, while you added professional knowledge. this was very helpful. i would love to see many more similar videos.
i agree about the E-bikes. their easy but not healthy. Id say that gravel bike was my favorite… but none of the bikes were exactly what im searching for. even my bike isnt exactly there… wish they had an event like that over here.

  5. In the middle east and Turkey, and in our country, those are called Shawarma's, not kebab.

I think, if you are going for MTBs, it is best to go withe eMTBs. The larger and slower tires will be offset by the electric motors. The reason is if you go on trails or xc, you will enjoy it more, especially on long climbs. As for getting weaker because of e-bikes, it all about discipline. Don't use it when training or if you are on flats. Use it only when you have to.

  6. Nice day out doc. A whole bunch of interesting bikes. Chocolate cakey ice looked amazing!

  7. Hello everyone, I would like to recommend to you an amateur documentary about a young man from Brazil who became a cyclist through his willpower:

(to find the documentary the title must be in portuguese)

Documentรกrio – Nรฃo Foi Apenas um Sonho (Parte 1)

Thank you for your attention, have a nice day.

  8. The jury is actually kind of out on the idea that riding ebikes will cause you to lose strength or power. That's not necessarily what's going to happen. As with any machine, it's a tool you use for the ends you want, so if you want to get more fit out of an ebike, I have little doubt you can. After all, you can just turn off the power completely and then you'll just have a heavier bike!

Pros these days usually have at least one ebike in their stable so that they can continue to ride a course they like or would like to train on for technical work, while spinning for recovery on the uphill. On their powertraining days, they simply reduce the power or take out a non-ebike.

Of course, on a tour the value of an ebike is that you can go for longer without expending power, so you can sightsee even when your legs are telling you no, or you can go for a long-distance day on a recovery day, simply by using more power.

The idea that you can only use an ebike on full power all the time or that this is the only point of using an ebike only happens when you don't or haven't used one for very long. When you use it regularly, you get the fairly obvious point that the amount of power you use is completely up to you, and you don't always want to to use a high setting, for a variety of reasons.

  10. Fun! It is great you combine bikes and food. I just got a gravel bike for my commute. So far 20 miles and feels good.

  11. Awesome video, I like that Thuong tried several different bikes and gave her assessment and your narration was spot on. All the bikes were interesting, but the gravel bike piqued my interest. I can tell she likes that E-Bike! The food looked delicious. Thanks for sharing.

  12. I do all my shopping by bike, most of the time I have to use three pannier bags plus a very large rucksack – visiting three supermarkets within a 10 mile radius. I couldn't do half as much as I do without my e-bike. ๐Ÿ˜€

  13. Cruise. Its good to see both of you enjoying the off-road experience on a bike in Japan. Any plans to ride awaji. I did it a fee years ago in a day and it was amazing.

  14. Yeah the ebikes are so fun you just do more and go so much farther on a ebike ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  15. Cycling is always cycling, but these culture differences.. (Finland has been many times called "Japan of Europe"; wonder just why..) many times get that feeling of "over politeness" though at same time knowing it's just the thing over there. Still sometimes I notice me face palming when thinking "if I were now there..". ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyway You make Japan look even more attractive to visit… ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. 14 people disliked this vid? Whats wrong with it? Here's what to do, all u dislikers out there, put you're critique on a postcard and send it to Santa Claus, at, The North Pole.

  17. You are doing a good job of showcasing Nagoya. Always amazed how much there is to do there. Japan may be a bit congested but congested in a good way with lots of great things fit in.
oh, and the Mamachari is still my favorite bike.

  18. I've got a 8 year old Medora hardtail XC….I'll keep it till it breaks or gets stolen. I'm starting to think my next bike will be a 200 watt MTB ebike or thereabouts. But who knows, might be a while away.

  19. I love Thuongโ€™s attitude, sheโ€™s so cool, relaxed, fun, just like you man, thatโ€™s why I love your vlogs guys, always enjoyable… keep up with the good content ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

  20. I think she'll thoroughly enjoy the ebike… ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ

  21. First time i tried a E bike i was like "can i climb things?" Apparently i climb one of the hardest climb in my local area like it was flat ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  22. Have to try out a ebike one day. Dont do much up hill stuff but like to try still. But I am with Thuong full suspension ๐Ÿ‘

  23. I have a Merida, so the e-bike part really made me smile (and also Thuong's first bite ^^). Another great content, lots of great info. Cheers!

  25. Never imagined that cycling is such a big thing in japan.
