  1. Korea and Japan are the lap dogs of the yt man, China is not. It’s really that simple.

  2. It's because China is the only nation considered a competitor to the USA dominance. So the USA media always slanders Chinese and its culture. It's also part of the USA culture to slander competitors

  3. Just wonder if many West guys would recognize Japanese or Korean as Chinese, then how come you said Chinese culture is not as cool as Korean or Japanese ? LOL, fairy to say, in the eyes of an ordinary, East Asian's culture = Chinese Culture, just as to many people, West = America . So no matter how hard you try, unless you totally change your gene and appearance, you will be always recognised as CHINESE 🙂 cheers

  4. can u not pls put USA and CHINA IQ old China had everything made gunpowder plus u do know what Napolean say, “China is a sleeping giant, let her sleep, for when she wakes, she will shake the world.” and it awake XD ok ? why u Haha ? you see China has a new space station US has old one it's going to decommission and yes its takes all these countries to BUILD ONE space station Canada, Japan, Sweden, United states, Frace, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Russia a a aa aaaa thats sad lol China one men army plus China had Golding age China its all you see look how they build the Great Wall Of China from people that want to take China, now it's did it space from people , then it will Mars from people China all 1.4 bill people

  5. Not just in the west bro. Even people in china love Japanese and Korean culture such as Kpop and manga. I believe those countries have the environment to allow those subcultures to grow and flourish.

  6. The simple answer is because Japan and South Korea are very happy to be subservient to the US and the West and China dares to forge their own path

  7. One thing that the Fung Bros. don't mention is that South Korea has such an understanding of Western music and entertainment because there was a large American military base in the heart of Seoul. South Korea, until about 2012 or so, was considered a "hardship" deployment, meaning you couldn't bring your family with you, so there were a lot of homesick young American service men in Korea.

These men had money to spend on entertainment in the heart of Seoul (Yongsan district) and back in the 60s, 70s and 80s the dollar went very far. So, clubs that catered to these young men were all over areas where there was a strong U.S. military presence. There was a lot of live music and a lot of eager Korean musicians looking to make a fistful of dollars. So, a lot of Korean musicians who knew how to play American top 40's were able to find lots of paying gigs thanks to U.S. army bases. The Kim Sisters who were the first "K-pop" group to ever be known in America started out playing to American G.I.s in Korea.

In addition to live music in and around Yongsan and Itaewon there was also Armed Forces Radio ("AFR") which was readily available all throughout South Korea and various Korean cable stations were dedicated to subtitled American movies like OCN. OCN is a popular Korean basic cable channel that plays pretty much all of America's summer blockbusters from five years ago, subtitled. Korean directors born in the 70's could be fed a steady diet of American media content on the radio and on basic cable.

Lastly, Christianity is a much bigger percentage of the Korean population in either Japan or China. Christian missionaries (Presbyterian, Methodists and Catholics) at the turn of the 20th century played a big role in starting schools and universities. In turn these universities had Westernized music, drama and philosophy programs. Hence, for Korean directors like Park Chan-wook, he majored in Western Philosophy from a Catholic university (Sogang University). Bong Joon-oh went to Yonsei University (founded by American Presbyterians) where he majored in Sociology.

  8. If you want to see a version of China that's more culturally accessible to the West, then look at former British colony Hong Kong in the 90's and early 00's. Movies like Chungking Express, Infernal Affairs, 2046, Kung Fu Hustle, etc. are all very accessible to Western audiences. Heck, Infernal Affairs was remade into "The Departed" which won a ton of Academy Awards (including best picture) and is even to this day considered an "American" classic… 🤣.

However, this bastion of Chinese Westernized creativity burned bright but flamed out in the early 2000's because it's hard to sustain that much creative energy with only ~ 7 million people. Also, China asserted more and more control of Hong Kong and that meant creativity, as it would be understood by Western sensibilities, would only decline as Chinese control asserted itself more.

Btw, I can't believe the Fung Bros. forgot the golden age of Hong Kong cinema. They're not THAT young, are they?… 😅

  9. I listen to a lot of Chinese music so I will use this as my basis. I think part of the reason why China isnt seen as "cool" as Japan or Korea is because the domestic market in China is so large they can market music that caters to themselves, creating a unique style the specifically Chinese. This can make it feel foreign to Americans who cant get culturally relate to it. The song "Made in China" by the Higher Brothers is a song that Americans can culturally relate to due us seeing the print "Made in China" everyday. However, the song "The Flow of Jiang-Hu" by C-Block and Gai may not garner the same attention due to a lack of cultural connection.

Another reason is that China is so large and diverse. You will get different styles from different cities and provinces. China also has 56 ethnic groups, and each one can bring their own element to it. In Aduo's song "Born to Drum" she represents the culture of traditional Miao drumming. In Alan's song "Morning Mist", she incorporates Tibetan elements. If you listen to VaVa's "My New Swag" theres the obvious incorporation of Beijing Opera, and if you listen to "Ghetto Boyz" by Athree its completely different since he raps in Uyghur. The girl group S.I.N.G mixes traditional and edm, and uses inspiration from different styles and ethnic groups. It's so diverse that you cant simply pinpoint something as being Chinese.

This makes it much harder to package something and export to world as being "Chinese", as compared to South Korea and Japan.

  10. The only thing people love about Chinese pop culture is kung fu films cause of Jackie Chan , Bruce Lee, jet li.

South Korea and Japan just have more to offer for pop culture like K-drama , kpop , anime . Along with food .

  11. I have to disagree. Being a US homie is just a small part of it. In my opinion, the reason is because South Korea (and note not North Korea) is opening up and embracing the future and the world. Japan used to be like this too, but not so much lately, they are turning inwards. South Koreans are embracing all countries and learning from other countries. And yes there are new things that are produced and created

  12. when you saw Anime yep Japanese when you saw Kpop yep Korean and when you saw Chinese just made me think about Kung fu or Jackie Chan , Donnie Yen. and everything about old generation. Chinese teen now a day they just wear dress and make up like Kpop style

  13. Koreas pop culture popular for near 30 years. The world is not just the West. Chinese is unpleasant to listen to. Sounds shrill, whiney, and high pitched. Nobo5gonna listen to that language.

  14. Besides just advisery political issues, the problem in Chinese culture is that its still deeply engraved into "culture for top elites only",
in contrast to japanese culture in ancient times.

There is still little sense of focusing on popularizing culture in china. Therefore cool wont work.

Chinese food, art and entertainment was often restricted to top circles , and ordinary people had no right to display make or sell such stuff.
The japanese who travelled of many of the elite stuff , but ordinary people , merchants , took the stuff to japan and made profit from the masses.

Ordinary people were more free in japan to create and even alter art, food , literature, so this is why many are focused on popularity. As long it sells. This is also things like depicting people closed up, sex or vulgarity is more acceptable , because elites dislike such depictions. Especially people because it could mock their leaders.
Japanese culture was therefore already similiar to western popular oriented creativity before the intense westernization started.

Korean culture was pretty much the same like china on culture elitism, that came from Pyongyang in north korea . Until japanese and western cultural attitudes were thrown into korean society. Southern korean elites where disconnected from the pyongyang elites after the war. So south korean goverment started to accept typical US popular culture as part of their society. Instead south korean elites often want to claim popularity as their identity so pop culture is often state sponsored. In japan, unlike china or korea, elites give the public the way on how they define culture in their country while keeping their understanding of elite culture just for themselves.

Many aspects of Western culture is in my opinion rooted in the open sea. Japan was open sea oriented as well so it created eastern culture that had something in common with the west. Cantonese people where also qualified.

  15. japan will retake the kurils sakhalin and vladivostok south korea will take north korea. we must prepare for war. pelosi already visited taiwan its time to recruit men into the military and marines and navy. and make more weapons

  16. Because they represent Asians All over the world, they ain’t suppose to be cool, you cool you get slapped and cheated on, Asians all over are respected cz of China

  17. All this history wen Wu stuff is kind of irrelevant. It's simply china doesn't export soft power/ media. Chinese culture was popping back in the Hong Kong days. There would be no wu tang without Chinese media. Jackie Chan is probably the most famous Asian house hold name. But since then Chinese media and entertainment is really being pushed abroad

  18. The perception of Chinese culture was very cool to the west in the 70s through 90s – mostly driven by Hong Kong movies, many of which were inspired by western movies/culture. That said, Mainland Chinese culture will struggle to create "cool" because the first step to that is simply having the freedom to create. The freedom to do their own thing, without fear of totalitarian repercussions. Until China enjoys freedom of speech, a free press, judicial freedoms to protect people from tyranny, it's simply not gonna happen. Until the people of China renounce their totalitarian society nothing substantial will change. I feel the most pity for those in Hong Kong. They had freedom. But now they too are under the CCPs thumb. They may as well be prisoners.

  19. Cars werent invented in America. Ford, with his assembly line, made it more affordable, rather than just for the rich. IMO, Cool is like the new trend, that has a following, thats going viral. Money and western education plays huge part in it, as in can it be sold outside the domestic market. China just has a lot of restrictions and their nationalism vs the West and outsiders mentality, plays big part. Also does China care? Chinese immigrants are pretty much everywhere in the world, huge diaspora. The closest Chinese cool movement, that I can think of, were the HK movies of the 70-90s, martial arts and cop/gangsters, with tons of choreography fighting and explosions. Think it helps, also to have some trade connections with the west. Japan, was one of the earliest industrialized countries in Asia, became an empire, and after WW2, had help from US. Korea, had to go through colonization, Korean civil war, before becoming industrialized and getting help from the US and West. China, before/during/after WW2 had civil war struggle, had some help from the USSR, but in the 1950-60s were closed off, so their industrialization was much slower, but grew fast in the 80s-now, but esp now they are restrictions of culture/ideas

  20. So much political grandstanding in the comments. What these comments fail to realize is that the vast majority of Chinese/Japanese/Korean culture came from their authoritarian, dictatorial history. Blaming the 'CCP' is such a juvenile take. The reality is clearly more to do with socioeconomics and geopolitics and the extent of westernization/ western subservience and assimilation.

  21. China is focused on world domination right but only though political means. There are popular entertainers and influencers there that are known globally, but they have an funny way of getting disappeared are co-opted by the CCP if they get too popular or criticize the CCP. So, there’s no real opportunity right now for Chinese culture to thrive b/c it’s being overshadowed by forced loyalty to the government.

  22. Don't worry about it too much. Japan and Korea are kind of exceptions.Check out other Asian countries and ones from other continents. They don't make any competitive entertainment either.

  23. I can speak from an American perspective. The U.S. relationship with China is strong, but only for financial reasons. United States government and even just normal citizens have disagreements with the way Chinese society works. If you learn about U.S. history, we dislike any culture with a large and controlling government because it reminds us of our past, when we fought back against oppressive British rule. This is why we feel the same way about Russia.

For me personally, I think Chinese history is incredibly Interesting and I have respect for China’s power, but I find Korean and Japanese culture more appealing simply because it is a bit closer to my own culture. I am still learning Mandarin just because I have some Chinese friends and I want to talk to them.

  24. Man, you guys nailed it…. every subject you guys talked about is always something i have questions to and is going through.
    Keep up the good work.

  25. Because Chinese people believe in "因爲在中國人太多," they don't recognize induvial distinctiveness as either Japan or Korea do. Last 5000 years, China has been copying neighboring cultures and has destroyed the remaining ones during the 文化大革命; there’s nothing left within them. Last 10 years and until recently, out of top 10 TV shows, 7 were copied from Korean drama or cartoons. They just cannot be creative.

For example, Korean actors/actresses respect the dram script writer wholeheartedly; they do their best to follow the written storylines. They do not take any acting roles which were illegally copied.

Ordinary Korean and Japanese people transformed their suffering and pain into acting, but Chinese people, for instance, are so much controlled by CCP they cannot express their feelings freely. Even though more than 10,000 people were killed 六四天安門事件, it is absolutely prohibited in China. It's all about whether people have freedom to express their ideas, creativity(I love xi jinping Winnie the pooh and it's very cute !), and ability to access "What really happened."

  26. Because Chinese culture is that of communism. It's like saying Russians were cool back in the 80s. Japan and Korea are long time democracies and Western. The only recent cool thing out of China was Yao Ming. You two dudes are morons.

  27. these guys don't know what they saying lol first of all korea is older than japan and just as china influenced korea it was korea that influenced japan with what they learned from china. second they're talking about the 1400s china for some reason when china was considered "cool" in europe in 17th and 18 century anyway because of chinoiserie. so none of that 1400s stuff matters. why are you talking about ancient stuff when chinese stuff used to be hella popular since the enlightenment age. the reason china fell out of favor in the 20th century is because of the great leap forward, the following cold war and the ccp's incessant censorship stifling anything culturally export worthy coming out of chinese communities save for Hong Kong in the 80s gee i wonder why that is.. It's no surprise Korea's chase to meet japan's soft power only started since south korea democratized in the late 1980s. remember, it was are you chinese or japanese not are you korean or japanese for the last 200 years. lmfao and it's not the west deciding what's cool. korea and japan are popular in countries politically and culturally opposed to the west. in fact, korea for example was only noticed by the west after cementing its foothold in greater asia for the last 20 years. even in the west its the asian diaspora at large that wholesale bought into japanese and later korean popular culture.

  28. Because china is dictatorship and dictatorship is not cool,SK and Japan are democracies and have freedom

  29. Le sigh. Like East Asians they really thought that being apolitical is a win. And didn’t have a sociology political frontier to inform people about their narrative. Like you can tell there something missing like on a brain level of East Asians particularly when they do art. It’s just aesthetically which anyone can do and for public celebrities it’s like they don’t even have meaning in their voice however restricted. And like is it a pipeline they thought oh screen monopolies we can win that with like script language and jiggling and like we did for hello kitty rice. Like I think creatively like it’s missing and like totally lost but for whatever reason if you pop some ysl in your music video you did something but like who wants to buy ysl from Korea or Japan or China. Like you could just walk to your friends house and chat about the latest bad movie. Yeah like why would Suzy from Long Island fork over $6000 Korean bag like why she can just can get a $6 latte before she goes to aspen.

  30. 1:30 i highly dissagree.back int he 80's they were a lots of anti japan sentiment in the us because they soared economically like china.yet its doesnt change japanese culture was exported.the problem with china is its lack of libert ;for having strong soft power like japana nd korea they need to give artists lots more of creative liberty.you can't have strong culture if a goverment is always regular the culture.

  31. chinese culture is just as cool as japanese or korean but its china due to their restrictions c who can't let creative artist goes off.hong kong cinema is a great exemple.hong kong cinema declined when china started to take control of hong kong in the late 90's
