oriental men can relate to bb as they can enjoy the sport. you don't have to be super sized and the only equipment needed is the ball and one hoop. you don't need the special equipment in sports like football to play it. same with hockey and baseball. you have to go out of your way (booking a field or an ice rink).
i belong to the local ymca and orientals play bb everyday.
In the philippines, highschool kids do imaginary crossovers without an actual ball

Basketball was popularized in the Philippines because we're kicking American asses in their own National game which was Baseball…since basketball players advantages on their height, and Filipinos has an average height of only 5'3"…either way we found ways to utilize our innate skills to play the game.
in Malaysia i would say basketball is more of a chinese community thing, mostly because the chinese schools for some reason here usually built basketball courts rather than the public schools where they usually have a soccer field instead

A huge reason basketball became so popular in China, specifically, was the MASSIVE marketing efforts of Nike via Michael Jordan's superstar image to push both the sport of basketball as well as the now mega-famous Jordan sneakers in the golden age of the 90s. It's a fascinating thing to witness what particular marketing or media translates over to Chinese youth culture. For example, when I taught in Xinzheng, Henan a TON of my students loved "Prison Break" and "The Vampire Diaries," but very few had heard of classics like "The Sopranos," "The Wire," or "Breaking Bad." The reasons are obvious: these shows are very much situated in American culture, whereas things like fantasy or prison drama are fairly universal. The same goes with basketball. No one needs a translation or a culturally-specific awareness to realize MJ was a god amongst men at putting a ball in a hoop.

Typical Asian Americans … Football (Soccer) is the number one sport in most of East Asia and Southeast Asia. The Philippines is the only country that takes basketball seriously. Everybody else pretty much plays football.
Football (soccer) is still the most popular sport in China, Japan and South Korea. Basketball is only the most popular sport in the Philippines. Countries like Malaysia, Singapore etc. also all prefer football (soccer) over basketball.
This is not to mention sports such as table tennis and badminton still being extremely popular recreational sports in East Asia.

I'm from England so I don't really get it. Why do Asians bother playing basketball if they are midgets. Never seen an Asian person over 6 foot in my life lol. Also football (soccer) is a pretty dangerous sport, way more injuries in football than in basketball and you can get hurt very easily.

Japan and Korea love baseball
Basketball is not the No.1 sport in China. Maybe number of people playing basketball regularly is more than that playing soccer or other sports (mainly because the restriction of soccer courts). But soccer is still the NO.1 sport in many sense. For example, the China soccer team SuNing sign Bale for 140 millions one year. The No.1 team in CBA (Chinese basketball association), players in the whole team just worth 40 millions. Also, the telecast ratings of China soccer league games is higher than NBA games, let alone top level European soccer games. From these data, you can see the market difference is so huge, which can imply that more people watching or loving soccer than basketball. Therefore, soccer is absolutely the No.1 sports in China. Even basketball fans like me in Chinese biggest basketball forum HUPU admits this fact. (I'm like writing a TOEFL essay lol)
I would say ice hockey would be better than soccer on a FPM scale they are both low scoring but hockey is less travelling and more plays.

Why ask the question? Why does any other ethnicity love basketball? Why is basketball "the" sport of black Americans? Things like this only plants divisions in people's mind.
