Canned sardines are a delicacy in Portugal. The country has a long fish-canning tradition, to the point that the sardine has become a national icon. We visited Conservas Pinhais, one of the oldest preserving factories in Portugal, that has kept its artisanal canning method since 1920. It makes 30,000 cans a day.

a few months after watching this, i happened to have a 24hr layover in 🇵🇹 i seen a can of this brand of sardines..i highly recommend you try it..have a good day & beyond 🙏🏿
Det är bra
Lol must have been lost in translation, but I'm pretty sure Portugal has a large Atlantic coastline, zero Mediterranean coastline
I'll look out for these, being a lover of oily fish.
So the workers wear gloves when handling raw fish but they want use or wear gloves when adding the cooked vegetables and fish inside the can that will be shipped for public to eat, really? How sanitary😏
Funny that the Portuguese guy says "In Portugal, we have s very large Mediterranean coast." (@1:14). Well, I have a news for him: Portugal HAS NO coast with the Mediterranean at all! All its coasts are on the Atlantic Ocean, and none on the Mediterranean!! Good God, do these people gat any education in their high schools, or just concentrate on fishing sardines?
I brougt them after watching this. The best sardine I've ever tasted.
why not removing the fish scales?
I like the red cain with tomatoes at 8:25. The employees appeared to be well treated like a family. Clean and efficient process. Like this video. Thanks.
4:07 Love how they fill the tins with olive oil by hand
Where can I get some!
I don’t understand why he says that Portugal has a very large mediteranean coast, because Portugal actually does not have coast to Mediteranean Sea. Probably the climate ?
Thank you
1:12 *Atlantic coast Not mediterranean!
Seriously. Portugal sardines taste better than other brands. Now I know why.
This video made me addicted to sardines 😢😢😐
Canned sardines in tomato sauce eaten with a hot steamed rice are a staple here for the broke college students… Its delicious, cheap, and more nutritious compared to other cheap intant products
Portugal is good for many world things ronaldo, sardines,…..peri peri
Sardines are the only animal I still knowingly eat. They are delicious, essentially the Parmigiano or the Roquefort of the fish. Contrary to what is often claimed, sardines are not "cheap". While a small can may not seem expensive, a kg of canned sardines is (at least in Toronto)is about as expensive as frozen salmon. I have never understood the combination with tomato sauce. I only buy the ones canned in water. They are so much better tasting. Some stores in Toronto sell frozen sardines. These are both cheaper and significantly better tasting than the canned ones, but it is not easy to find them and availability is spotty.
If we had more companies like this, maybe we would eat less food but its quality would be significantly higher. In my opinion it'd be a win-win situation, as the general population would be less prone to obesity and mega food plants wouldn't disguise trash as edible product.
They sure do like sardines in Portugal I had never seen boutique stores of nothing but sardines before going there.
granted I was high at the time, but eating my first can of Nuri spiced dines in tomato sauce was an almost religious experience. tears came to my eyes, it was so good.
I bought a 4-pack from Amazon because it's not available in Australia after watching this documentary.
Way more than what I would've paid for 4 tins of sardines but seeing how proud the workers are to put on their label, it's my small gift to them.
One of my favourites.
I remember being 12,starving and looking through the cupboards. I can't say how grateful I was when I found a can of sardines 💙 🙏
Do sardines have scales? The question came to mind due to the process starting off by cutting the head and not removing scales.
Excellent.. if I may ask.. how long till expiration of a cane ??
1:14 There is no Mediterranean coast in Portugal. Portuguese sardines come from the Atlantic and they are wonderful.
The world needs to go back to simple, whole foods. I’m 43 and have a.ways been repulsed by the thought of sardines. Until the past couple of months when a single can of King Oscars have been refused regularly at the food pantry I volunteer at. So I wanted to learn about them, after all, they’re eaten around the world. I just made a mashed-up sardine sandwich for my family a few days ago – and my 6 year old son loved it! I’ve since purchased a few cans for our pantry, and actually look forward to acquiring more of a taste. I look forward to trying the ones that were presented at the end of this!
In eaters Europe where i am from we have unfortunately so rubish food. We are paying the same price for it but the quality is so bad.
it is gratifying that there're still companies like this, caring about quality especially in these times where canned food is almost synonymous poor quality
It's so funny I'm watching this and eating there sardines here in the use I have there tomato cause spicy and there great awesome job guys this stuff is great
Man I was raised on sardines and rice 💪💪💪 good stuff
1:12 Someone needs to tell this fellow that Portugal has a very small Mediterranean coast, like absolutely ZERO Mediterranean coast. However they have a very large Atlantic coastline.
Can you get them in the us? Does anyone know?
Am I missing something. Portugal doesn't have a Mediterranean coast.
I would love to try it !
But the bare hands touching the food did shock me 😳 I know they washed their hands but I'm sure at the end of the day their fingers look like old people fingers.
What an honorable man, and such hardworking lovely people he has working for him
