Join me on this lovely sunny afternoon for a beautiful relaxing walk in the Gion area of Kyoto, Japan. Gion originated as an entertainment district in the Sengoku period (1467-1615) and today it is famous as a beautiful area of shops, restaurants and ochaya (teahouses), where geiko (the Kyoto term for geisha) and maiko (the geiko apprentices) can still be found. I start my walk today in Ichinocho, 市之町 a quiet neighborhood of bars and restaurants near the Takase-gawa, 高瀬川 a lovely small canal that was made for transporting rice and sake from Kyoto’s city center to the southern Fushimi Ward, where sake is still made. Crossing the beautifully named Donguribashi 団栗橋 or Acorn Bridge, I get a lovely view of the famous Kamo-gawa, 鴨川 the main river in Kyoto. Crossing the street, I walk a little way along Donguri-dori before turning down a lovely narrow street, typical of the old Gion alley ways that we can find in this area of Kyoto. Exploring this area further, I come across the gorgeous Ebisu Shrine 恵美須神社, a really haven of tranquility in the heart of this busy city! This shrine is just a short walk from the end point of my walk, at Kennin-ji Temple 建仁寺. This temple was constructed in 1202 and is considered to be the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. It is ranked third among the five great Zen temples of Kyoto, and it is certainly a beautiful place to end this relaxing afternoon walk. This incredible area of Kyoto is one of the places you must visit when traveling to Japan – don’t miss it! Whether you are with family, friends or just into solo travel Japan is a great place to visit! I hope you enjoy this relaxing 4k walk!
