In winter, the heavy snow needs to be shoveled so that people can commute to work and school and get on with their daily lives in Snow Country. Because this region receives so much snow each year, it is also important to clear snow from rooves and walls of building or else they can be damaged or even collapse.
Minamiuonuma City is also home to the International University of Japan (IUJ), a graduate schools which enrolls several hundred students from Japan and numerous other countries around the world. As a way to learn about how locals deal with the heavy snowfall this region is prone to, two graduate students from Pakistan and Nepal volunteered to help the Minamiuonuma City Office clear snow from a public building buried in snow. Shoveling snow and trying out a number of snow-removal tools for the first time in their lives they got a taste of one of the struggles that locals in this region have overcome to survive in this region of Japan. Thanks to their help the building was safely cleared! And afterwards they also had a chance to try some popular regional foods during a picnic above the snow as a thank you their hard work. Enjoy!
