Join me for a conversation about whether Instagram has ruined travel. The mass media loves to report about how social media has destroyed popular travel destinations. But has instagram really ruined travel? I’ll share my opinion about it, and take live Q&A afterwards.

But you’d certainly think it has with headlines like:

  1. I went to Chernobyl well before it was popular & the TV show. It was nothing to do with social media. It's a strange and eerie place.

  2. When I first discovered your channel and learned that you're doing it more as a hobby and not for the money, I thought to myself that creating such videos could probably enhance the traveling experience. I can't speak from experience, but I imagine having a little project, documenting the trip, having something to focus on, giving an angle to what you are doing during the vacation, having the camera and other tech toys to play around with, is more fun than just drifting through a trip, eating, sleeping, lounging and not much more, even if nobody would be watching those videos later. Developing an audience and a fanbase to interact with later, might just be a cherry on top.
If I could travel, I would probably do the same.

  3. We just got back from a 13 night Europe carry-on trip. From experience now, your videos helped get our feet wet before the adventure. Good work.

  4. Instagram hasn’t ruined travel but it hasn’t done it any favors. Places are being loved to death. :/

  5. Mmm I think there are pros and cons to social media + travel. It depends on what people use it for. I love looking ahead of time to find places I want to eat or maybe local places I want to check out, outside of the tourist condensed areas. Instagram and social media can be great for that. The con for me, is I think people focus more on needing to get a great picture or setting up a shoot and less just enjoying or absorbing the location/history/science of it all. When I went to the grand canyon last year, it was really depressing how many people just took a picture and walked away. They never looked outside the viewfinder. Kind of sad. I am all for taking photos to capture memories, but I don't really see that as much anymore. Now when I go on vacations, I really push to make sure I don't post anything and just snap some pictures of things I want to put in a frame or paint later.

  6. Great video- Live stream, sorry I wasn't able to watch it live, always enjoy watching it the next day. Our driver in Ireland told us about a person falling off The Cliffs of Moher , trying to get an Instagram picture. ! Really not worth an injury or dying to get a picture. Thanks Chris

  7. Charge to go in town ! Sky rocket the prices of everything. 90 % of tourists they do bad to the place they visit .

  8. Great discussion. I don't think Instagram has ruined travel, but it's definitely impacted it in positive and negatives ways. More places get exposed, but at what point is it overexposed? Great point on infrastructure too. Hawaii needs to address this as we are getting 10 million visitors a year and climbing. The islands are struggling to keep up.

  9. I guess social media could be taxing for some people. I can only speak for myself. Social media hasn't ruined travel for us…too much…so far😬. When we want to travel I try to do a lot of research, I check to see where and when most people are going places and then we try do the opposite. We go when no one is traveling much and to places where no one is going. So far so good. ✈️ 🗿🗽🚢🗼🏝⛩🎎 🌁🏛 😊.

  10. Thank you for your tips . On how to film restaurants and be comfortable with video, We just do it for our marriage to be nerd friends in paradise!

  11. Have you ever seen the pictures where a lot of people climb Mount Everest? It looks terrible! They are standing in lines to get on top (it is f*** cold there!). Sometimes people are not even fit enough to climb up there. I do not know if it's because social media or cultural change. Everybody thinks he can do everything (kind of…).

  12. Am I the only person who finds Instagram boring? I have a profile, but I hardly ever go on there.
I don't think social media itself has ruined travel, but definitely mass tourism. It's really unenjoyable visiting a site with hoards of people. My way around it is going to a place off season, or going to a site really early in the morning or later in the evening.
Like I just recently stayed in Kyoto for a week. I just made a point of visiting less crowded temples (they were just as beautiful), and went to places like Fushimi Inari about 8am, I pretty much had the place to myself.

  13. My mom said that her favorite trip ever was to Egypt years ago, and touring the pyramids. She said it was hot and exhausting, but very educational.

  14. For me it has been a double edged sword. When I go places I do see people trying to take crazy pictures to be unique on Instagram and they end up damaging things and also I’ve seen an increase in tourists everywhere I go. Even my hometown, which wasn’t that touristy, has gotten a lot of attention and influencers are starting to move here raising home costs :/
But at the same time I like seeing pictures of places that I’ve never even heard of and adding it to my bucket list. And also I get to share my adventures with family and friends through social media. To be honest though I don’t take that many pictures. I rarely post, just when my family asks lol

  15. Hello! we just stumbled over your amazing channel and really enjoy your video clips. 👍 We are travelling a lot, maybe you'd also want to check out our Cinematic Travel Musicvideo too 🌴 So lets motivate each other. Enjoy your amazing day, and also continue the great work! 😊

  16. The other thing about taking photos, any good photographer knows to not really waste your time outside in the midday sun taking photos. So if you are serious about taking some actually good photos on vacation, you need to take them at our around sunrise and sunset… Yes there are exceptions but in general this is true.

  17. Randomly turned on this video to try to fall back asleep. Heard my city’s name…. we definitely had poppy-popolis. Instagram didn’t cover the poppies, the news definitely did.
