Our dog has been on the road for 18 months as we travel in our Rv. We made some mistakes and learned a lot- in fact, our dog Mango didn’t hardly eat the first month.

Liz and Paul provide some tips of what to bring and how to prepare your dog before you travel, as well as some good ideas on how to make it easier on your pet once you are on the road.

See our BUYING GUIDE below as well as our list of tips.

  2. No, no, no! They don’t have to go to a kennel to get Bordatella! Just contact with another dog who may have it! It’s an inexpensive nasally-applied vaccine so just do it. There are also dog belts that clip to the harness and snap into the normal seat belt buckle that are not expensive. Traveler TIP: Stay away from any place where other people walk their dogs, such as rest areas and dog parks. We always run our pack on just an empty country lane.

  3. These are very good suggestions but the health one. If a dog is given the diet nature provided for them they won't get sick and need any vaccines or meds. That is raw meat. I love animals but don't like the inconveniences and all the nutty regulations one must follow. I just like to explore and not worry about if pets are allowed or have to be back to care for them. I got a warm wife for all the love and attention I need and she takes care of herself. Don't understand why so many full timers need pets. Maybe if your single.

"BARFĀ®" is an acronym that means Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. It is a complete and carefully balanced blend of raw meat, fruits, vegetables and bone. The formula mimics what nature has designed for pet's to thrive on in the wild. The result is a pet free of allergies, digestive problems, and full of life!
98% of tested dog food proved to be unfit food with a wide range of problems from sick animals used to, over processing, poisonous substances from unclean progressing plants, too much grain, ect.

  4. The 24 hour Vet. Info.Ā is MOST vital .Ā  Groomers are good to know as well ( skunks ) .Ā  I keep dog wash gear with me as well and a 1stAid kit for the mutt .Ā Ā  My big weapon for me is "Ā Renuzit " ( odor control ).Ā  Good luck to all the tribe

  5. Thanks so much for all the useful information. I really like your retractable outdoor lead. Mango looks like a great dog!

  6. Hi! We were subscribed and got the boot from YouTube I guess. We have a Chinese Crested Hairless named Hairy and live in Okinawa, Japan. We are moving back to the USA this summer to start our full time Rv journey. Great tips about traveling with dogs.

  7. Thanks for the tips as we have an English bulldog(Louie) and we are just going to start are weekend warrior camping in Minnesota soon. Good stuff!!

  8. We lost our pup over the holidays (I just realize that’s ambiguous. He died <sniff> he didn’t run away), but he was a stubby little guy and what you do for Mango wouldn’t have worked for him. The seatbelt through his harness would’ve kept him pinned to the seat. I had your setup for our 30 pound dog and it worked great, but not for a short 13 pounder!! Here’s what worked for us:

    Kurgo tether zipline
When we towed a popup – before the Travato – I strung this line along the Outback’s ceiling hooked to the two handles over the back seat doors. And I had him attached to that by a nylon cord clipped to his harness. He had just enough slack that he could curl up when he wanted to or get up and run from window to window.
    https://www.amazon.com/Kurgo-Zip-Line-Leash-Carabiner/dp/B002AN6STC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1FIIYOLDXQ5F7&dchild=1&keywords=kurgo+zipline+tether&qid=1588561422&sprefix=Kurgo+tether+z%2Caps%2C264&sr=8-1

And I have two of these. Just folding slabs of foam. When one is flipped up and over, it makes 2 steps. Folded down, it makes a dog bed. I had them across the back seat, butt to butt, each folded up at the ends under the windows for little steps so the pup could look out. I had tried a hanging booster seat, but it was too hot and he was stuck on one side and sometimes would be in the sun. This worked much better and he was tethered by his harness, so he couldn’t become a projectile or end up on the floor.

(I’m editing my previous post to a different link because you can better see how the stairs work. And they’re all the same. They’re very cheap, the corners ripped out pretty quickly, but they served the purpose. I had two of them, and if one was laid flat and one was folded and put on top, you ended up with a three-stair ramp. Occasionally we stopped at a hotel – we had a popup with no bathroom – and would enjoy a nice hot shower, do our laundry, spend a nite in a nice big warm bed. And I would take the stairs up and set them up by the bed so the little pup could get up on the bed. And when we were home, I would set them up in front of the window so he could go up and look out. They were cheaply made, but we certainly got good use out of them) Woof.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Steps-Breathable-Mesh-Pet-Stairs-Detachable-Pet-Bed-Dog-Cat-Ramp-Foldable-/402148839411

And I bought a cheap DC clipon fan to keep him cool since the AC didn’t get to the back seat very well. I attached it behind my headrest and pointed it down on him. It plugged into the Subaru cigarette lighter.

  9. I’m like you, Liz. I am a Plan B person. But I never thought to look for the local 24-hour vet where we went. Great idea! I certainly had the local ones in my database. And here’s something I am a big fan of. Pethub.com it’s just a small metal dog tag, but it’s inscribed with a unique QR code. It’s a one time purchase and you can go in and enter your pup’s information, your info, medical conditions, meds. If somebody finds your lost dog, they can scan the tag with their smart phone and it’ll open up to the dog’s info. There are various subscription plans you can get with various services, but you don’t have to do that. I just bought the basic tag for under $20, no plans, and it’s good forever. You can go in and update it and change it to a different dog when the time comes.
If Mango did go missing, you could immediately go online and update your information to reflect the park you’re staying at. Basically it does what the microchip does, but it’s just an extra bit of security and it has a bit of flexibility. Anyone with a smart phone can read it, they don’t have to take it to a vet to scan the chip and you can update it quickly.

I had an escape artist once and I got a custom collar that had my cell phone number woven into it. Whatever it takes to get them back!

  10. Hi guys! Hi Mango! ā¤ļøšŸ¶ great tips for traveling. Our Jimi does a great job on travel days and we love our hamster water bottle to keep hooked on his crate and to have on the ready when traveling. A pet bed or blanket from home can help your dog feel happy and safe during the adjustment. ā¤ļøā¤ļø

  11. Hey Liz and Paul i noticed that i hadnt got any new video alerts so i checked and im still subscribed! I hope that yall are doing well enjoying life? I have been watching the net sites that i frequent and found one about Ca, and Fl. that was live a couple of days ago. The citizens of the Capitol there confronted the gov and were standing face to face with swat team type POLICE. A doctor from nearby San Diego stood on a soapbox with a bullhorn the words he spoke were magical. He stated as a Doctor and former military vet himself that he took a oath. He put the question back to the Police who formed a line and made them think? The end result was the Police retreated and walked away . As their Police fell one at a time no one rushed them but it was like God had touched there hearts. We should pray more and stand our grand with constitutional rights. No bloodshed occurred and it was a good ending. Wish you two the best. im Art from the West side of Tennessee..

  12. Great tips, Also if you travel with dogs or cats, we travel with our 2 cats, consistent drinking water is a must. We use (Zero-Water) 30 cup dispenser both at home and in our rig, so the drinking water is always consistent no matter where the water source is from.

  13. This is probably the best RV dog tip video I've seen! Thank you! (Great job on the haircut, Paul!)

  14. šŸ•šŸ’©šŸ¤²P…u…šŸ™€I say mate, I ran out of plastic bags? What shall I do? šŸ™ŠšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

  15. That's about right. You should stop every two hours. As people get older it's not good for them to ride for long periods of time. The body needs movement to circulate the blood flow in the legs. Animals are the same way. So if you feel your ankles getting a little stiff then it time to get up and move around. Happy traveling.

  16. I travel with 2 small dogs. It has been very important that I have them harnessed in the car or truck very securely. I've been using the Kurgo car harness. I noticed you used a harness and put the car seat belt through it. I hadn't seen one like that.

  17. Mango is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! AND SO ARE YOU too! And i love you guys but my wife and daughter are both Vets, so don't starve Mango for your own selfish reasons. He needs to EAT on a schedule NOT when it's convenience for you. Shame on you!!!!!!!!

  18. Liz and Paul, thank you for the animal tips you did a great job covering the tips. If I may I would like to add a tip. Please dont walk your dog or tie him out in the sun. The pavement gets very hot and will burn the pads of your dogs feet. Ok I'm done.
I cant believe Mango is 13 years old, he looks like a much younger dog.
Paul, are you a hair stylist or barber by trade? It looks like you did a pretty good job. I bet you dont get a tip for gauging Lizs' face. Ouch. Lol

  19. Great tips! One other one I've heard is to put a sign or note in your window that has your phone number in case there's some sort of emergency and people need to contact you while you're away from your rig but your pet is inside. Another idea is to have a hide-a-key or number code lock that in an emergency you could give the location/code to someone so they can rescue your pet from inside. The types of emergencies where someone might need to contact you quickly could be propane leak, fire or flood, or if your dog escapes from your rig.

  20. Our dogs now are pretty good but we had one who would bark and howl nonstop if he had to travel in a crate. And he chewed through a doggy seatbelt harness. Even just a doggy barricade to keep in him the backseat made him crazy. So we finally just relented and let him travel 'free' which basically meant on my lap.

One of our current dogs drools a ton while car traveling. We learned that's a sign of car sickness. Obviously it means he needs additional water, too. But we experimented and it turns out he does better in our Class C motorhome than in a car/truck/airplane so that's great for us šŸ™‚ Basically, my advice is just to experiment and see what might work well for your furry friends.

  21. I'm planning on two German Shepherds traveling with us. Thank you for the information!

  22. The only thing I would add is to make sure that you pack preventative such as heartworm and flea and tick medication. There are areas of the country that don't necessarily use heartworm preventative all year but if you're chasing the warm-weather you're definitely going to want to have them on heartworm and flea and tick during the winter months. Flea and tick is easy to get without a prescription but veterinarians require a prescription for heartworm preventative and usually they want a current heartworm test in order to purchase them so it may be something that would be easier to get from your home veternarian before you leave and get a year's worth either with you or be able to order it from an online provider like Amazon chewy.com Petco etc. So glad that Mango is enjoying traveling with you guys! I have two senior dogs and I don't RV currently but I am considering it and I definitely would have to make accommodations for my dogs because not being able to take them with me is a deal breaker! I really enjoy your videos! You give a lot of really good information and you are such a cute couple to watch. I am so happy that you found each other on the road!

  23. Great video on traveling with dogs. If people travel in the hotter climates and leave their pets in the RV they might want to get something that notifies them the power went out (or back on) or the temp is too high/low. Useful if the power is on and the A/C fails to come on. We use a MarCELL from Sensored Life. Other devices are out there. We travel often in very hot climate – 90 plus. We carry small battery powered fans, cooling pads that use water and gel pads we keep in the freezer for emergency. My biggest fear is 95 outside and the power goes down and my generator or A/C won't start. Our little ones cannot take the heat. Again, very well done video on living with dogs when traveling.

  24. Sure hope Mango is doing better. I lost my 11 year old Golden Retriever "Boo" last year. It's so hard to see them age and go downhill.

  25. Those "bone shaped" name tags are dangerous. They can get caught in a fence or in the crate. Use round shapes so they don't get "hooked".
