Latvia is a small Baltic republic, a country with a strong national identity, situated within the centre of the Baltic States. Throughout the course of history its desire for freedom has always taken it forward. Riga is the capital of Latvia, a Hanseatic city and European capital of culture. Saint Petri Church is one of the oldest in the centre of the city and, at the same time, a main landmark. It is one of the most important sacred buildings of the Middle Ages and is closely linked with the development of the city. Close to Riga is Jurmala, today a popular health resort on the Latvian Riviera, with splendid bay-windowed villas, battlements and towers, formerly Baroque and later with a nod at Gothic. Thirty kilometres of beaches with bright erinaceous quartz and a mild climate created a holiday paradise in the nineteenth century. Amid the fertile Zemgale Plain is the magnificent, huge Baroque Jelgava Castle, the largest in Latvia. In 1737 the residence of the then secular ruler of the Duchy Of Kurland was built on the ramparts of an ancient castle of the Livonian Order. Beneath the southeast corner of the castle is the Crypt Of The Dukes, a tomb vault with thirty superbly decorated sarcophagi of tin and wood. The picturesque primordial river valley of Gauja has for centuries attracted travellers from each corner of the world. This Livonian Switzerland not only has the charm of primary nature, but also all the ambience of the Middle Ages. Today’s Latvia is now striking a healthy balance between a market economy, ancient traditions and the burdensome legacy of a turbulent past. Its journey into the European Union has been a success, thanks to courage, strength and faith!

    Disappointed, that in the beautiful city of Liepaja with its lovely architecture and beaches, they chose to highlight Karosta prison and the crumbling fortress.

    But I hate how you pronounced 'Trīs Brāļi'
    You make the ī and ā longer and hold it for a second. Just look up how to pronounce it before you say it.

    This country is ugly, flat and boring. Starring at an empty desk for 2 hours is far more exciting than visiting Latvia. What a shithole.

    Latvia a European Union "success" "healthy balance" successfully developed a "market economy'???? Where is the best most developed in the USSR industry? Where is the VEF RADIO -ELECTRONICS enterprise that rivaled Telefunken of Germany and the Dutch Philips, where is RVZ that built electric trains and railroad stock for export and all of the USSR, where are minibusses that developed and built before FORD or GM even had any idea about that kind of vehicle. Where are the best in Eur ope Dairy Industry and agriculture? Where are rowing clubs, sailing, cycling teams, sailplanes clubs, where are these remarkable achievements??? Where is Mr. Tal world chess champion MANY times? I do know what I am talking about my family goes back couple hundred years we had and rented agricultural enterprises, we had flour mills, wood processing factories. The first Russian Revolution in 1905 started in Latvia. Latvians were first in the revolutionary movement in the Russian Empire. Lenin trusted only Latvian Guards, so-called "Latishskie Strelki " so did Trotsky when he lead the Red Latvian Troops brutally suppressed the Revolt of Czechoslovak troops, he trusted Red Latvians with the brutal fight against the Czechs. What does Latvia have now -empty fields, homesteads where only aged peasants who cannot move to the EU to work on fish processing plants or take care and clean chamber pots of western Europeans. Next year EU subsidies are over, do you think Americans or Germans care about you Latvians not so , particularly the Germans who think of you in not flattering terms.

    Ok , lest say Latvia lituania are 1 of beautiful country in east europe. But i wondering thers alot of there citizen no work in there country and comming in norway.
