I recently started a new job here in Japan and decided that I would commute to work by bike everyday. It’s 20km each way, so 40km a day, 200km a week, and 800km a month. I got a lot of requests to show a bike commute route on the city roads in Japan, so today I tried a new route through the city and talk about is it safe to bike commute on city roads.

The river path is much safer and quieter since I don’t have to deal with cars, but I found that cycling through the busy city roads was also a nice change of pace, as I got to see many other unique things and lots more people with their commute routines.

Which do you think is better, commuting on the city roads, or taking the river cycling path? What do you think of the busy Japanese roads?

  1. You guys asked for it, so here it is. I tried commuting on the main roads in Japan. What do you guys think? Quite a bit different than the nice, quiet river path 😅

  2. Where im from its actually safer if you cycle in the middle of the lane compared to cycling near the footpath curbs.

  3. hello good afternoon, congratulations on your channel! I have been following your videos and mainly your equipment tips and the main cycling stores. Today watching this video, I have been thinking about buying a bike, I see cyclists on the weekend riding on exclusive motorways and I wonder if it is prohibited or not? because there are great bike paths here in japan and also in relation to insurance for bicycles and in relation to specific laws? Could you help me with this doubt !? Thanks in advance for your attention and I wish you good pedals … Greetings (sorry if there are error, I don't speak English and I'm using the translator!)

  4. prefer the main roads, they are safer as you can really judge the other traffic, in the small streets people are not used to fast bikes. Lot less traffic than Tokyo 🙂

  5. You must come to Mumbai and get cycling experience, you will master dodging, speeding skills,If you can ride bicycle in india then you can drive anywhere in the world. I find absolutely safe to ride in Japan, unlike mumbai no proper cycling lanes, honking bikes, cars, people everywhere, roads full of potholes. Better get an MTB when you come here.

  6. Hope we can ride together someday! Im living around nagoya as well. And I'm very familiar on the roads you took today! Ride safe!

  7. Observations: Clean Roads (no litter) and NO graffiti…. Great Ride…. 🇺🇸

  8. Riding a bicycle in Tokyo seems so dangerous. (Although I deem Tokyo as a great city in most aspects.) There are no separated bicyle lanes. You have ride on the car lane, and frequently have to bypass the parked car, which makes you more close to the rushing cars on your right side.
I lived in Shanghai for a half year. I think Shanghai is more friendly to bicycles. There are almost always dedicated bicycle lanes separated with white solid lines (road marks). On wider roads there are even protected bicycle lanes. Cars will give walkers and bicycles priority at crossings, which you don't see in most Chinese cities except Shanghai and Hangzhou.

  9. That looks scary to be honest… I am obviously spoiled by supernice and superfast bikeroads that go throughout the city

  10. Japan is very good place to ride a bike. Their standard is very high. If you 👀 whole video, you can not find even any one trash at the steet. Very high and clean people are there.

  11. Great video. It’s so relaxing to watch it. I’m a new subscriber. I also started to document my rides here in Melbourne. Ride safe. 😊😊

  12. your video is so terrifying, ditching cars like that, so ya i think your video made its point apparently

  13. Japanese car culture is pretty much the same as the American, it's sad how you don't have official bike lanes for commuting in the main streets and if you want to ride safely, you're forced to be in the sidewalks which are terrible because of the constant bumping and slows down.
