Welcome to Japan’s “Snow Country,” the Sea of Japan facing regions of central and northern Honshu as well as Hokkaido, which are subject to some of the heaviest snowfalls in the world! In this video I head to the towns of Tsunan and Tokamachi in Niigata prefecture during a big sea effect snow outbreak.

  1. Great video mate! Looks an entirely different world to what we have down here in Oki. Really enjoyed it, keep the vids coming!

  2. Is it bad I actually don't mind those prefectual roads? 😆
I find the highways scarier when its the powdery heavy snow since it kicks up a lot, and reduces visibility further. I push 80, but there's always lorries, or some mad local still going over 100.
The prefectual roads are the only type of road between Asahikawa and Wakkanai, and the standard besides toll roads leading in/out of Sapporo.

Few things I noticed, Honshu doesn't have arrows pointing down and hanging over the side of road to indicate to you where the side of the road is. Standard in Hokkaido, they really help in the winter especially driving on narrow mountainous or coastal roads, even wide inaka roads benefit too since blowing snow could obscure your visibility and the road and fields become one.

Also the road water spray to prevent snow from accumulating, guessing Hokkaido is too cold for that, or there is just too much road here.

This winter has been very nice so far. Been a bit calm this past week, and looking to stay calm for the near future. Hopefully things pick back up, and February delivers too!

  3. Your making me jealous, why can't we have decent snow in UK. I wish the video was longer.

  4. just watched your amazing video – thank you for taking all the efforts to show it to us – greetings from germany…

  5. Captivating footage, from the surreal snowy landscapes to the people clearing the street. Love the pace and storytelling too. You took us to a different world, thanks James!

  6. Just amazing. That’s one heck of a thumper of snow!! Here in Western Kentucky it’s very rare to see something like this. The most I have seen is 22 inches in 2004. Hopefully one day I’ll get to experience something like this. Just beautiful work James. Very good job. Enjoy and be safe.

  7. Hey James! I really love all your work, this is a very beautiful video of the snow! 2 things, 1 I think that you should definitely chase globally when this pandemic is over. And also on your Typhoon videos could you please put time stamps on the video like Icyclone. Keep up the good work Mate. Love it!

  8. Gorgeous work, James. Each shot is so beautifully composed, and the variety is incredible– each shot is so different. I feel like I'm there– the piece really brings you to this place and puts you in it. And, as usual, great music choices. P.S. I was slightly disturbed by your claim that winter is your favorite season there, but I decided to dismiss it as temporary insanity.

  9. What are those nifty snow clearing sleds called and where do I get one??

Beautiful work of art. Thanks for the stellar content.

Godspeed from the American Rust Belt.

  10. Fantastic video James. Great shots, editing and music! I've never seen snow like that during my years in Japan. Love it.

  11. Stunning SNOW video, James, the likes of which I will never see! Makes me appreciate your diligence to share this with us even more! Love that Snow Eating Train! Those night time flakes were mega huge! Nothing wrong with a ChaserDude expanding his range of weather phenomenon to Chase!!!

  12. That timelapse at 0:43 is amazing, almost frightening.
I also remember watching some of your stock footage from Tōkamachi a while ago, it's truly spectacular – especially at 4K and sufficient bitrate.
Maybe one day I'll be able go there and record a lot myself, I can never get enough of snow and winter!
