Join us on a bikepacking trip through Wakayama prefecture in Japan! This video is our last day cycling along Wakayama’s winding coast line from Shirahama to Kushimoto, about 80km.
This was probably the most spectacular bit of cycling on the Wakayama 800 with stunning sea views and sunsets! To treat ourselves on our last night, we checked in to the Marriott Fairfield hotel in Kushimoto and greatly enjoyed our stay. Did you know that you can hand over your luggage to the hotel reception in Japan and they will package it and have it sent to your home? We tried it out to limit our luggage on the train back and were delighted with the delivery speed and low cost of around 10 Euros / 1200 yen.
Before catching the train back with our bikes all the way from Kushimoto to Yokohama, we cycled to the most southern point of Honshu, called Shionosaki. You can go up the lighthouse for panorama views or stop along the cliffs for a refreshing sea breeze.
We left Wakayama with a heavy heart and would happily return and do this bike trip all over again! Next time, we’d like to cycle further along the east coast of Wakayama and see the famous waterfalls. It’s always good to have a reason to return!
