Yubara Onsen is a hot spring located in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. The hot springs that gush out along the Asahikawa River are all alkaline simple hot springs, and are effective for chronic rheumatism, neuralgia, neuritis, musculoskeletal disorders such as bone and joint disorders, fatigue, insomnia, arteriosclerosis, chronic dermatitis, and others. Yubara Onsen is a habitat area for the Japanese giant salamander, designated as a national special natural treasure. One of the most famous landmarks of Yubara Onsen is the “Sunayu,” a large communal open-air bath below the Yubara Dam. The name “Sunayu” comes from the fact that the hot spring water is gushing sand from the bottom of the river. “Hakkei” is located overlooking that open-air bath “Sunayu” below. The lounge is furnished with a Steinway grand piano, and the wide glass windows offer a relaxing view of the Asahikawa River. It is a very relaxing space. The chef at this ryokan is a talented chef who beat Masaharu Morimoto, the third generation Iron Chef of Japanese cuisine, on the Japanese TV program “Ryouri no Tetsujin (Iron Chef) “. The ryokan’s delicious cuisine using healthy seasonal vegetables is one of its main attractions. Also, the seasonal river fish is grilled slowly over a distant high flame, so it is very savory and can be eaten whole, from head to tail. I stayed in a suite with a hot spring bath and was able to spend happy hours in the hot spring at any time of my choice, or sipping my favorite gin on the terrace with a view surrounded by nature.
