Taormina Italy is a commune in the metropolitan Messina on the east coast of Sicily, Italy. Taormina has been a tourist destination since the 19th century. Its beaches, including Bella Island, can be reached by a cable car built in the Ionian Sea in 1992 and by highway from Messina to the north and Catania to the south. The ancient theater of Taormina is probably a Roman theater because it is built primarily of bricks, but the plans and layout are those of the Greek and non-Roman theaters. The current building is believed to have been rebuilt on the foundations of an old Greek theater. Just south of Taormina is Isola Bella, a nature reserve. Further south into the bay is the popular seaside resort of Naxos. Guided tours of the Capo Sant ‘Andrea caves are also offered. The village of Taormina is on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea. There are many old churches, lively bars, fine dining and antique shops as well as ancient Greek theaters. Taormina is about a 45-minute drive from Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano.
Volcanic Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea provide the cinema-worthy backdrop for Taormina, Sicily’s legendary resort town. Twisting medieval streets and a second-century Greek theater add to its romantic air, which inspired the writings of D.H. Lawrence and Truman Capote. Take a cable car to the beach, or walk uphill behind the Church of St. Joseph for panoramic views.
