Nîmes represents with Rome one of the most complete urban testimonies in the West of Roman civilization. City and colony founded in the 1st century BCE, it preserves from this period an important monumental ensemble that has made, for several centuries, its international fame. Among them, the Amphitheatre, the Magne Tower, the Castellum aquae, the Temple of Diana vestige of the sanctuary of the Fountain, the Gate of Augustus are all landmark buildings of the Gallo-Roman culture present in the city.

Among all these remarkable Romanesque monuments we have covered Temple of Diana, the sanctuary of the Fountain, the Amphitheatre, Maison Carrée.

Temple of Diana: Its precise function is not known but it is the most romantic and also the most enigmatic monument in Nîmes—doubtless linked with the imperial sanctuary.
The lateral passages used to lead to an upper level but the various vaults and the niches in the large room do not match the components of Greco-Roman temples. The origin of its name is also a mystery. During his stay in Nîmes around 1570, the Venetian architect Palladio made numerous sketches of the building before a fire gave it its present appearance. Today, it consists only of a barrel-vaulted nave and two lateral passages, one of which (the south-east one) was almost totally destroyed.

The Sanctuary of the Fountain: Decorated with vases and statues, the Jardins de la Fontaine count as one of the major public gardens in Europe. They were laid out in the eighteenth century on the site of the ancient spring, an area that includes the Tour Magne and the Temple of Diana.

Arena of Nîmes: The Roman amphitheatre (or arena) in Nîmes is the best-conserved of the Roman world. It was used for hunting wild animals and for gladiator combats from the end of the first century AD onwards. Many events are held there today.

Maison Carrée: Built during Augustus’ lifetime between 10 BC. J.-C. and the very beginning of the first century AD, the temple consists of thirty columns of nine meters high, twenty of which are engaged and enclose the cella (the inner room), preceded by a pronaos (the space designating the vestibule or the entrance) which is accessed by a staircase of 17 steps. The stone used for its construction is a beautiful limestone from the Bois des Lens. Classified as a historical monument since 1840, the Maison Carrée is a Roman hexastyle pseudo peripteran temple in Corinthian style 31.81 meters long by 15 wide and 17 meters high.
