The Togakushi Shrine is the most sacred Shinto shrine in Nagano and even Japan. Built deep inside the mountains, it is associated with one of the most famous legends in Japanese mythology involving Amaterasu, the Sun goddess and highest deity in Shintoism. However, during my visit here I also got SUPER lucky, and by PURE coincidence I was able to witness a Shinto ritual that few tourists have ever seen, as it only takes place once every 7 years…

The Togakushi region is also famous for its handmade soba, or buckwheat noodles, so definitely try it out at one of the many soba restaurants near the Middle Shrine when you’re here!

How to get to Togakushi Shrine
Togakushi Shrine can be accessed by public transport from Nagano Station. Go to the Alpico Bus Terminal across the street from Nagano Station and buy a ticket from the vending machine (English available). You can choose to go to the Lower, Middle, or Inner Shrine with each one increasing slightly in price (¥1,250 – ¥1,350).
