1. Pennine Way, United Kingdom
The Pennine Way is the UK’s most famous long distance path, stretching 268 miles from the Derbyshire Peak District to the Scottish Borders.
The trek takes about three weeks, travelling through rugged moorland east of Manchester and the picture-perfect Yorkshire Dales before reaching Hadrian’s Wall and continuing on to Scotland. Outdoor fans, campers, and anyone who can withstand the whims of British weather will enjoy this.
2. Camino de Santiago de Compostela, Spain
The Camino, also known as the Way of St. James, is a collection of pilgrimage paths that all lead to the shrine of the apostle St. James in Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral. The most popular modern route follows a line across northern Spain from the French Pyrenees. While some travelers prefer to stay in monasteries along the way, several tour companies also provide hotel accommodations and luggage transportation.
Pura Aventura offers an 11-day tour in Galicia, with accommodations in boutique inns and luggage delivered each day.
3 Appalachian Trail, United States
The Appalachian Trail is described as the world’s longest hiking-only pathway, stretching 2,200 miles.
It stretches from Georgia’s Springer Mountain to Maine’s Mount Katahdin, traversing through some of the country’s most isolated terrain. That means it’s a big undertaking for anyone who doesn’t have a lot of vacation time or wants to walk a tiny section of a traditional route.
Well-marked paths and campsites mean it can be tackled alone. But those keen on comfort can use companies like Go Shenandoah, which offers pre-booked lodge accommodation and packed lunches in the spectacular Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, home to some of the best scenery on the trail.
4. The Basho Wayfarer, Japan
Japan has a plethora of historic pathways that connect temples and cities. This self-guided tour follows in the footsteps of Matsuo Basho, a poet who lived almost 300 years ago.
The six-day walk begins in Sendai and travels across northern Tohoku, passing via Hiraizumi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the old Dewa Kaido trail, with its beech and cherry trees, before rising into the Natagiri-toge mountains and terminating at Yamadera Temple.
After a long day of hiking, Walk Japan offers accommodation in traditional ryokan with access to onsen pools to ease aching bones.
5. Refugio Frey and Cerro Catedral, Argentina
Several beautiful treks may be found in the area around Bariloche in Argentina’s Lake District.
However, for those with limited time, the one-day journey to Refugio Frey and Cerro Catedral is difficult to beat.
A bus to Villa Catedral drops you off at the beginning of a large, well-marked trail that weaves its way into the Andes, passing through woods until emerging above the tree line into a world of stunning, soaring peaks. Visitors to Refugio Frey can either stay in the hut or camp on the grounds.
6. Mount Toubkal, Morocco
A journey to the top of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167 meters (13,671 ft), is not for the faint of heart. The path ascends from Imlil hamlet, crossing a dry riverbed before climbing steeply through Sidi Chamharouch’s shrine and on to a huge mountain lodge.
Hikers put on crampons and head up the snowfield to the summit, where the Atlas Mountains open up and the views are unstoppable.
Much Better Adventures, which can organize both a local guide and muleteers to carry luggage, as well as transfers to and from Marrakech, can help.
