Odaiba is an artificial island inside Tokyo Bay. In the Edo period, multiple small forts and gun emplacements were built to protect what was then Edo harbor. Over time the land between the gun batteries was filled in. Battery 6 has been left on a separate island and has returned to nature.
However, it was not history that made my wife want to visit Odaiba. The island is now known as a high-tech entertainment hub. In 1996 the area developed when Odaiba was rezoned to permit entertainment zones. This led to rapid development and growth as shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, and museums opened on the island. The island can be accessed by Rainbow bridge and Yurikamome. During the 2020 Olympics beach volleyball, canoeing, rowing, gymnastics, triathlon, and marathon swimming took place on Odaiba.
My wife’s main interest in going to Odaiba was two of the statues. One of them is a replica of the Statue of Liberty, the other a Gundam statue. Gundam is a popular franchise that started as an anime in 1979. The statue is the size one would really be and is 19.7-meter (64.6 feet) tall.
The French Statue of Liberty spent a year in Odaiba from April 1998 to May 1999. It was so popular that a replica was built after the original returned to France. My favorite part was visiting the Soya a museum ship. I made a video about it previously.
