Welcome to Kurashiki (倉敷市)

Kurashiki is located in Okayama Prefecture, not far from the prefectural capital of Okayama City.
It’s known for the centuries-old buildings and shops of the Bikan Historical Quarter.

The Ohara Museum of Art has works by European masters such as El Greco and Monet.
Nearby, Japan Rural Toy Museum displays toys from the 1600s to the 1980s.

The Archaeological Museum has artifacts from the region’s ancient cultures.

You can cruise the district’s narrow central canal in small boats.

This is the Kurashiki Ivy Square (倉敷アイビースクエア) it is a complex of brick buildings covered in ivy that includes museums, restaurants and a hotel.
The area was the site of the first modern cotton mill in Japan, and the brick buildings were originally built as part of the mill in 1889.
During the Edo Period (1603-1867), before the construction of the mill, the site was used as the office of the local magistrate, who exercised control over Kurashiki as the direct representative of the shogun.
