Join me for an evening ride on Japan’s fastest train, the shinkansen, from Odawara to Kyoto.
I took the Hikari N700, which is a high-speed train that travels between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka. This train that travels on the Tokaido Shinkansen rail line stops at cities such as Nagoya, Shizuoka and my stop, Kyoto.
The great thing about this particular shinkansen is that it can be used with the JR Pass! The JR Pass is an amazingly cost effective way of travelling around Japan for tourists and are only available to buy outside of Japan. There are three classes of train on the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Nozomi (fastest), the Hikari and the Mizuho (Slower). Only the Hikari class is valid with the JR Pass. Always check the train signage and listen to the announcements on the platform to be sure you get on the correct train.
