Join us on a bikepacking trip through Wakayama prefecture in Japan! This video is our fourth day – cycling from Wakayama’s countryside Shimizu Onsen via a craft beer brewery in Arida and all the way to the coastline down to Mihama.
Our day starts with exploring Zao Bridge along the Aridagawa – this bridge is actually quite adventurous and not for the faint of heart! As we cycled further into Japan’s countryside we saw quite a few abandoned schools that were converted into cafes or shops. After the first 30 km, we arrived in Arida (Japan’s mikan capital) and stopped at Nomcraft Brewery which had been recommended to us by a local we met on our first day in Wakayama City, and to our surprise were given a tour of the brewery by the owners! After a lovely hazy IPA, we set off again and still had to cycle 60km. At the time, we thought it’s just another 30-40 km to go, Google Maps was wrong! It was tough, pushing our tired bodies up and down the mountains along the coast with partially no street lights.
But then when we made it to the guesthouse by the coast and were greeted by the super friendly owner who made a delicious Japanese bar-style dinner for us, it was all worth it!
