Enjoy this tour of historic Lauriston Castle in Edinburgh Scotland. It’s just one of several castles in Edinburgh and the surrounding area with a long and often bloody history.
The castle’s beautiful old Tower House was built in 1500’s to replace an earlier one destroyed during medieval times, the rest of Lauriston Castle was added during the Victorian era of the 1800’s.
We will explore the beautiful castle grounds, which were mostly laid out by William Playfair in the 1840s, with stunning views over the River Forth.. Much of the planting you see in the gardens still date to that period. A later edition to the castle gardens is the award-winning Japanese Friendship garden, gifted by the prefecture of Kyoto, Japan, and it’s a very tranquil place to relax, as you will see.
The last owner bequeathed Lauriston Castle and its grounds to the City of Edinburgh in the 1920’s for everyone to enjoy. Like many old Scottish castles, it is also reputed to be one of Edinburgh’s haunted places, perhaps by its first owner who was murdered?
