We visit the largest rice field terrace in Japan with viewpoints especially for tourists, the resting place of Izanami (the goddess who, legend has it, created Japan) at Hananoiwaya Shrine, which predates the Japanese Shinto religion and is said to be the oldest shrine in Japan, and explore some impressively devilish rocks along the Kumano coastline at the “Demon’s Castle”.
This area is also famed for being one of the few undisturbed loggerhead turtle nesting beaches remaining in Japan, so if you visit Mie, why not stop at the nearby Kiho Sea Turtle Roadside Station to learn about these beautiful endangered animals too? 💙
📍 LOCATIONS: Kumano-shi, Mie Prefecture /
Roadside Station “Kihocho Sea Turtle Park” /
Maruyama Senmaida rice terrace /
Shichiri Mihama beach /
Hana no Iwaya Shrine /
Work Heritage Shishiiwa /
Onigajo (“Demon’s Castle”) /
