You would be hard-pressed to find a home in Japan that does not have an example of “mingei” design tucked away somewhere. Since the term was coined almost a century ago, the design principles of mingei have permeated into many parts of our everyday lives — so much so that even ¥100 stores these days are littered with examples. Mingei (literally “arts of the people”) has an ethos that is based on valuing the inherent beauty of everyday objects. In its simplest form, it’s an appreciation of the ordinary and, as such, honors the generations of unknown craftspeople who created the works. Read more about mingei with the link in our bio. 📸 Rebecca Saunders
