Naoshima, the setting for the Setouchi Triennale 2022, is already world famous as an “Island of Art”. Before the pandemic caused by Covid-19, the island was visited by 700,000 people annually.
Naoshima’s beginnings date back to the 1980s when Soichiro Fukutake, now chairman of the Fukutake Foundation, took over his father’s business and at the same time promoted the cultural vision of Naoshima that his father had held.
And as Soichiro Fukutake toured the beautiful Seto Inland Sea in his own boat, he realized the warmth of people’s hearts and the importance of history, which are not found in the big city.
“Modern society is dominated by capitalist money- and material-centered thinking and lacks the concept of being people-centered.”
Soichiro Fukutake saw the beautiful scenery created by the Seto Inland Sea and felt a sense of crisis toward modern society. He then devised and implemented a plan to exhibit works of contemporary art that would radiate a message through the natural setting of Naoshima.
In “Out of Bounds,” a special exhibition held in 1994, art works were displayed in the natural environment of the island. Artists who exhibited their works included such up-and-coming artists as Yayoi Kusama, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Shinro Otake, Kazuo Katase, Takashi Murakami, Kenjiro Okazaki, Hotaro Koyama, Technocrat, Yasutaka Nakanowatari, PH Studio, and Takuya Matsunoki.
In addition, Richard Long, Jannis Kounellis, Walter De Maria, James Turrell, and others also visited Naoshima to create site-specific works of art that are unique to the island.
Tadao Ando, who designed the Benesse House Museum as well as the Chichu Art Museum and the Lee Ufan Museum, designed those museums to blend into the beautiful natural surroundings of the Seto Inland Sea, the first national park in Japan to be designated as such. These museums incorporate “light,” which he values in his designs.
