Sakaide City is famous in Japan as the “Town of the Great Seto Bridge”.
The Great Seto Bridge was built to traverse the Seto Inland Sea from north to south, connecting Kagawa on Shikoku with Okayama on Honshu. Although its design resembles the Rainbow Bridge at Daiba in Tokyo, the Great Seto Bridge is a two-story bridge with the first floor for railroads and the second floor for automobiles.

If you are coming to Kagawa Prefecture, you should have two options: come to Takamatsu Airport by plane, or take the Shinkansen bullet train to Okayama Station, where you can transfer to an express train running on the JR Seto-ohashi Line or a rapid train called the Marine Liner.
If you choose to travel by train, you will pass through the first level of this Great Seto Bridge. Also, the “Sunrise Seto” sleeper express train, which departs from Tokyo Station every night, passes through this Great Seto Bridge in the early morning, stopping at Sakaide and Takamatsu Stations.

About Great Seto Bridge :
In 1889, Jinnojo Okubo, a member of the Kagawa prefectural assembly, proposed the construction of the Great Seto Bridge. However, construction was impossible with the technology available in Japan at the time, and the concept he proposed was a pipe dream.
However, in 1955, an accident involving a ship in the Seto Inland Sea called the Shiun Maru disaster occurred, and this major accident provided a major impetus for the construction of the Great Seto Bridge.
Shiun Maru was the name of the ship, and it was a liaison ship between Takamatsu and Uno ports. The liaison ship sank after coming into contact with another ship due to thick fog.
Unfortunately, 168 people died in that accident, 108 of whom were elementary school students. A memorial to the victims of this accident is located in Saiho-cho, Takamatsu City.
This accident led to the realization of the construction of the Great Seto Bridge starting from Sakaide City.

Do you know that most Japanese can swim? :
The story of the 1955 Shiun Maru disaster is very well known in Japan, as it led to the introduction of swimming lessons in earnest in elementary and junior high schools throughout Japan.
Hence, most Japanese today know how to swim the breaststroke, crawl, backstroke, etc., and they should be able to swim in situations where swimming is required.

The Great Seto Bridge required many engineers from the time it was started in 1978 until its completion, and the central area of Sakaide City was crowded with many people. However, due to the aging population and low birthrate, the city now has a population of approximately 50,000.
