The 223 Series is a major workhorse operated by JR West, first introduced in 1994. A total of 923 cars were manufactured by Hitachi, Kawasaki and Kinki Sharyo. The 2500 series is powered by IGBT-VVVF propulsion system. They can be found on the Tōkaidō Main Line, Sanyō Main Line, Kosei Line, Hokuriku Main Line, Kusatsu Line, Akō Line, Sanin Main Line, Maizuru Line, Osaka Loop Line, Hanwa Line, Kansai Airport Line, Kisei Main Line, Fukuchiyama Line, Seto-Ōhashi Line, and Bantan Line.

The Kansai Airport Rapid is the direct JR West service between Kansai International Airport and Osaka. It couples/de-couples with the Kishuji Rapid Service (to Wakayama) at Hineno station. The other airport, the Haruka Limited Express service, serves Shin-Osaka (Shinkansen station) and Kyoto. On the Kansai Airport Line, a shuttle service also exists between Kansai Airport and Hineno station.
