杨巷路自明朝开始，已有营商氛围。杨巷路位于荔湾区，北邻德星路，南接长乐路，长约400米，毗邻上下九，属于西关地带。其中有好多著名的街巷，例如良巷，万钟首约，怀远北，怀远驿，崇俭新街等等。明朝，西关商业逐渐繁盛，广州与外国交往日益频繁，官府在杨巷路修建驿站，接待番商、番使。清朝，十三行专营对外贸易，杨巷路邻近十三行，营商气息浓厚。新中国成立前，卖布的店铺便已经集中在杨巷路。
