After Amaterasu retreated to the Heavenly Cave, the goddess Amenouzume performed a wild, pantomimic dance for the entertainment of all the other gods gathered around the cave. The resulting ruckus caused the curious Amaterasu to emerge from her cave, saving the world from darkness. These days, Amenouzume’s routine is celebrated in the form of the sacred Kagura dance, the most famous version of which is performed in Takachiho. Between November and February, the town holds a massive Kagura festival consisting of 33 dances performed throughout the night to honor Takachiho’s agricultural deities. Admission is usually free but in some cases you will need to bring two bottles of sake with you as offerings for the gods.
