Do Americans eat fast food every day? Are Americans really as rude as you’ve heard? Is everyone fat in America? I’ll be debunking these, and many more common myths that people believe until they visit the USA. When travelers visit the USA they finally realize that many of the things they’ve heard about the United States of America are just urban legends and aren’t true.

1. That we all live in huge houses
The average house size in all of the United States is 2,500 square feet (or 230 sq meters)
In California it’s only 1,625 square feet (or 150 sq meters)

2. That you can drive from one side of the country to the other in a few hours
Google maps says its 42 hours of nonstop driving
6 hours to fly from NYC to LA
Most first time visitors to the US have over ambitious goals

3. That there’s nothing to see in the middle of the country
Mt. Rushmore is in the middle in South Dakota, and it gets 3M visitors per year. We’ll never build something like this again.

4. That the USA is going to warmer/colder than where you’re from…
That it snows all over the US and we all get to celebrate a white christmas.
So many different temperatures and climates, you’ll find them all here!

5. That we all speak English (or only English)

6. That Americans are rude
I think this stereotype comes from the “Rude New Yorker” – the Soup Nazi from Seinfield is legendary. We may be loud… but I think in general we’re quite a friendly country.
Sometimes “efficiency” can be confused for rudeness.

7. That everyone is carrying a gun all the time
Most people that own guns usually keep that at home, locked up in a gun safe. Gun ownership higher in the rural areas, and Texas.

8. That NYC, SF, and LA are beautiful places
One explorer said: Diversity of people and culture is the distinctive part of New York City… not the dirty, smelly, humid metropolis full of trash and homeless people it actually is.

9. That NYC, SF, and LA are relaxing or chill places
If you fly in to LAX… you unrelaxing trip will start there. LAX and most of the New York airports resemble a city bus terminal more than they do Singapore’s Changi airport. Traffic, horns, crazy people on the streets.

10. That we eat fast food all the time
That it’s all burgers and fries. The USA probably has the most diverse food on the planet – especially in metropolitan areas.

11. Americans only drink Starbucks
Or Mcdonalds, or Dunkin Donuts. Really bad coffee.
In the last few years we’ve had a wave of really good coffee shops opening up.

12. We only drink budweiser and the beer is terrible
The beer scene is another one that’s been on the up and up!

13. That we don’t have our own cuisine
Cajun/Creole down in the south… Gumbo, Jambalaya
BBQ – In particular Texas BBQ.

14. That Americans use knives and forks like everyone else
Not so much… everything is carved up into small pieces in the knife and fork change hands and then the knife is put down and then the focus transfer back to the right hand. I have only ever seen Americans do this.

15. Americans are fat

16. That we see celebrities all the time

17. If you’re not white it’s unsafe to travel to the US
I hear this one from Asians quite a bit… it comes in this form “Chris… I’m from Singapore and going to visit Los Angeles… will I be safe?”
From OCGIRL: That if you’re not white you’re not “American”

18. That Americans hate tourists

19. Americans share one culture

20. The the states are truly united
You’ll find alot of differences going between the various states… almost like mini countries

21. Americans are less cultured

22. That money grows on trees

23. Americans are lazy.. don’t work hard.
Americans are workaholics.

24. That people in the USA are just as educated about your country as you are about the US

25. That people don’t walk in the USA… or that you have to drive

And 5 more!
