It is built in Wakamatsu Ryokuchi Park near the site of Ipponki Kanmon, where Toshizo Hijikata is said to have fallen by ammunition at the end of the Battle of Hakodate. There are a lot of flowers for Hijikata fans all over the country.
It was in 1868 (Meiji 1) that Toshizo Hijikata, the deputy director of the Shinsengumi, joined the former Shogunate army led by Takeaki Enomoto and entered Hakodate. He died on May 11th of the following year (June 20th in the current calendar), the day of the Hakodate total attack by the new government forces.
At the site of Ippongi Kanmon, one of the places where Hijikata is said to have fallen by ammunition, there is a monument to the end of Hijikata Toshizo. A 15-minute walk from Hakodate Station, it is located on the grounds of the Hakodate City General Welfare Center “Aiyoru 21”, and you can visit it at any time. Hijikata fans from all over the country come to see the flowers.
Every year, on the first day of the Hakodate Goryokaku Festival, a group of people wearing the costumes of the time visit and hold a monumental festival.
