Japan Van Life Ch 44: Sekijuku (Pt 1)
It’s not often you hear the words “secret menu” and “Japan” in the same sentence, so when we found out about Mie Prefecture’s Kameyama miso yaki udon, a fried noodle dish that began as an off-menu item for tired truckers who stopped in the historical town along the old Tokaido road, we couldn’t wait to try it for ourselves! Kameyama udon is a mix of fruity red miso paste, thick Japanese udon noodles, and either beef, pork, or “hormone” (organ meat) served with cabbage and beni shoga (pickled ginger) which originated in a yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) restaurant and has since gone on to claim gold as Japan’s B-1 Grade best local speciality dish. It’s so tasty it even has its own mascot! You can see from our reactions that these are some of the best noodles we’ve ever tried!
If you are planning to visit Japan and see the old samurai post towns along the historical Tokaido road which leads from Tokyo to Kyoto and to Japan’s most famous shrine, Ise Grand Shrine, then you’ll want to make a stop at Kameyama on your way to Sekijuku (Japan’s best preserved Edo Period post town) to try these noodles!

Restaurant “Ueda Shokudo” (うえだ食堂)
Ueda Shokudo (Cafeteria) has been serving hungry customers for over 50 years. It is one of the handful of Kameyama yaki miso udon restaurants in Mie Prefecture that attract both locals and tourists and, despite its casual “mom and pop” restaurant appearances, boasts a wall lined with celebrity signatures.
We recommend their famous Kameyama udon (700 yen or 950 yen for the set meal with rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables) and the Kameyama ramen (800 yen or 1000 yen for the rice and karate fried chicken set) which has a truly unique beef bone and miso broth!
