Riding a Triumph Bonneville T120 over Hardknott Pass.

Hardknott and Wrynose Pass in the Lake District are a right of passage for most UK bikers. So with a clear day forecast and temperatures up in the teens, I set off on the Bonneville T120 to earn my stripes.

Riding through the Lake District is always a mix of aggravation at getting stuck behind endless lines of cars and sheer happiness when the road opens up and you get a clear run at some of the best biking roads in the UK. But those moments of pure riding joy quickly evaporate when you find yourself at the foot of Hardknott Pass and road abruptly turns skyward.

Hardknott Pass has a fierce reputation for unseating many a biker who underestimated how steep and sharp some of the turns are, it’s shame the cameras don’t do it justice. Luckily the high torque of the Bonneville T120 makes it almost the perfect bike for taking on the pass, pulling itself up the incline with such ease I did for a second wonder what all the fuss was about. Until I went down the other side and realised that torque is no help in stopping a quarter ton bike from an ever more rapid descent.

But I made it down to the other side just fine and ticked off another one of Britain’s ‘classic rides’; … Applecross, I’m coming for you…
