Vanlife Japan Ch 48: Market Munchies
In today’s foodie tour vlog, we’re visiting Japan’s famous Nishiki Market (錦市場, “Nishiki Ichiba”), which is also known as Kyoto’s Kitchen, to eat some of the city’s best street food.

Nishiki is a traditional Japanese shopping arcade close to the Geisha district of Gion and it is the biggest market in Kyoto, with a 400 year history (though it originally opened as a fish market in 1310!). If you want to try very cheap local food or taste some free food samples in Kyoto, this is the best place to go! You will find a mix of traditional Japanese food and sake tasting stores here as well as a few souvenir shops, and you can get a real taste of traditional Japanese drinking culture in the Showa Era izakayas (Japanese pubs) along the alleyways, too. We went in search of a street food bargain, ate one of Japan’s most iconic winter foods, and after nonstop van life, we’re ready to enjoy a drink!

What we ate / drank:
🐙 Takoyaki
🌰 Roasted chestnuts
🍢 Oden
🍶 Sake
🍺 Suntory The Premium Malt’s Beer

🍢 What is oden?
Oden is a type of hot pot dish (nabemono) that is commonly eaten in winter in Japan. It consists of an assortment of ingredients such as eggs, daikon radish, konjac, and fishcakes boiled in a soy sauce dashi broth. This comfort food is famous in Japan and is best eaten with karashi (Japanese mustard).
