Japan Travel: Sento Imperial Palace tour of wonderful garden, Kyoto56,Japan
Sento Imperial Palace (Sentō Gosho) is a secondary palace complex across from the Kyoto Imperial Palace in Kyoto Imperial Park. It was constructed in 1630 as the retirement palace of Emperor Gomizuno, and then became the palace for subsequent retired emperors.
The original palace structures burnt down in 1854 and were not renovated. Instead, Omiya Palace was constructed on the Sento grounds in 1867 and is now used as the lodging place for the current prince and princess whenever they are in Kyoto.
To visit Sento Imperial Palace, appointment is required for a free tour through the Imperial Household Agency, which administrates all the Imperial properties. The tour walks through the excellent Sento garden which consists of the North Pond and South Pond areas. It is a beautiful example of a strolling garden.
