We spent two weeks in Japan, flying into Tokyo Haneda airport and getting our JR passes before heading to Nikko in Tochigi prefecture. We explored the beautiful temples of Nikko, and visited the disappearing ghost gizo, before taking the shinkansen to Nagano in Nagano prefecture. Nagano was our favourite stop on the trip. In Nagano we visited the iconic three layer Togakushi shrine, located in the mountains of Nagano. Next we travelled to Kanazawa to see the samurai district and visit one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, Kenrokuen. We took the Thunderbird express to Osaka where we visited Dotonbori and saw a prayer burning ceremony at Hozenji Temple. The next day we travelled to Nara to hang out with the deer of Nara, before heading to Kyoto to see the Arashiyama bamboo forest and the iconi Fushimi Inari temple with it’s orange tori gates. Our next stop was Nagoya, which is often left our of most itineraries. Nagoya had a big festival going on, and we visited Super Potato and Mandarake. Lastly we headed back to Tokyo where we made day trips to Mitaka to see Hiyao Miyazaki’s Ghibli Museum. We also visited Kamakura, the ancient capital city on the ocean with the giant seated Buddha. Back in Tokyo we timed out trip perfectly to see cherry blossoms in Ueno, Asakusa, obaiba and many other places all over Tokyo!
