Otaru is a lovely town situated on Ishikari Bay along the Sea of Japan in Hokkaido. The name Otaru is being derived from the Ainu word ‘Otarunai’, meaning “River running through the sandy beach.” Otaru developed itself as a modern town in the late 19th century. Provided with a good natural harbour, it is now the second most important seaport after Hakodate and the largest industrial and commercial city on the west coast of Hokkaido. The city is also a recreation centre for Asarigawa Spa, Otamoi Park, and the Otaru Aquarium, one of the largest in Japan.

Otaru was recognized as a village by the Bakufu (The Shogun’s official were collectively the Bakufu) in 1865, and in 1880 the first railway line in Hokkaido was opened with daily service between Otaru and Sapporo.

We boarded the train from Sapporo to Otaru, a journey which was an attraction in itself, as the train hugs the tracks of the coastline where waves crash against rocks and the shores are covered in snow. If you manage to find a seat, or a window even, then go for the right side of the train to view the amazing beautiful wintery scenery of the coast of Ishikari Bay along the Sea of Japan.
