This video is an introduction to the inside of the 787 Series Limited Express Kamome 5 bound for Nagasaki, running on the Nagasaki Main Line, as well as footage of the train window scenery. There are two types of limited express Kamome trains, the 787 series (black Kamome) and the 885 series (white Kamome), and I boarded the 787 series (black Kamome) and took this video.
The Series 787 limited express train debuted in 1992 as the “Limited Express Tsubame” on the Kagoshima Main Line, inheriting the name of the famous “Tsubame” train of yesteryear. It won the prestigious Brunel Prize and Blue Ribbon Award one after another. The train is like a moving hotel, with its massive body, chic and modern interior, DX green seats, green private rooms, and box seats. It is a train car that offers a luxurious time filled with all the charms of train travel.
Mr. Seiji Mitooka, an industrial designer of Dawn Design Institute, who designed the 787 series express train, said the following in his lecture “Design for the Public”.
When I designed the “Tsubame” limited express train in 1992, it was an incredibly energetic job, not only changing the color of the existing train cars but also “creating a train car that looks like a hotel,” under the slogan of “reviving wonderful train travel.
It took an unimaginable amount of time and effort, but there are glimpses of novelty and challenge everywhere.
When I ride the 787 series express train now, I don’t feel like I designed it myself. Because of the passion of everyone involved, it is a universal design that never gets old, even today. He said.
