MUSIC OF NOW | AWAY FROM KNOWN | WORLD MUSIC

Thank you for visiting our page. My name is Matej Kolenic, my artist’s name is MK. I was born in Slovakia and I have been living in Japan for 9 years now.
I am co-founder and art director of Ethnopunk project, a creative tradition movement. In June 2020, with a friend and producer of this project, Hari K, we started a promotion journey called “Following pilgrimage steps of Ancient Japan (守破離の巡礼)”. We started walking from Kamakura with a final goal in Yakushima.
Last winter we set up our art base in Odai, Mie Prefecture (Event space, Recording studio & Tea farm) and we are now preparing to establish an NPO organisation in order to manage and promote the project and its activities.

We have been on the journey for two years already. Now, we are in Kyoto, nearly a half way through. This year we will do our best to reach the big goal of Yakushima.
So please support this campaign to make it happen!

First of all, watch this promotional video to catch a glimpse of the journey. ”Following pilgrimage steps of Ancient Japan (守破離の巡礼) ”.

▼ What is Ethnopunk?
Ethnopunk is an evolution of ethnic music. We focus on learning about traditional art while looking for new and authentic expressions.

“Following pilgrimage steps of Ancient Japan ” is a campaign to promote Ethnopunk project, its music, visions and ideas. During our walks we meet local people, discover their stories, new places and share our experiences of unique and authentic Japanese culture with the whole wide world.. 🙂
We take inspiration from those wonderful stories and express them through our videos, photos and especially with shamisen and fuyara flutes, creating new music, songs and melodies.
The purpose of Ethnopunk, is to convey the importance of traditions and culture to people, especially younger and new generations in a fascinating and interesting way that will create active passionate engagements.
We are also looking for opportunities to collaborate with different artists we meet during our journey. We seek to share our ideas and skills with them as well as encourage their own personal development, artistic impressions and help them find their own creative voice.
That’s why we are developing our organisation, building the recording and workshop bases to realise all these activities in order to support not only our ideas but also guiding the development of the younger generation in creative tradition, away from known.
