We drove for 2 days to try these pork buns.

Apparently 551 Horai holds the title of Japan’s most popular steamed pork buns (also known as 豚まん “butaman” or 肉まん “nikuman”)..and they’re supposedly the most stinky, too! We drove from Tokyo to Osaka without using any toll roads to try them for ourselves and see why they’re the most famous pork bun in Japan. Come for a drive with us for the last installment of our mammoth journey from Tokyo to Osaka to see deer and Christmas illuminations in Nara, and see our real reactions to Japan’s best pork buns!

After 4 months of full time life on the road traveling around Japan in our van, we headed home to Tokyo to get our MOT (road-worthiness inspection) done to make sure the van was roadworthy (a scary moment after all the unorthodox vanlife DIY renovations) and to grab my new Japan residence visa before hitting the road once more. To make up for all the lost time we spent doing van and visa admin work over the holidays, we decided to drive for 2 days from Tokyo to Osaka without using toll roads to continue our adventure.

We drove 500km+ over 48 hours to make it to Osaka for Christmas Day. To travel around Japan on a budget, we drove the whole distance using national highways and without using toll roads, and slept in our car at roadside stations and rest areas.

Using toll roads, the journey should take around 6 hours and around ¥12,000 ($120), but as van lifers on a budget, we wanted to see how cheap (and how long) the journey would take us without adding the toll routes!

551 Horai

This famous pork bun shop in Osaka sells over 170,000 steamed buns filled with lashings of pork mince every single day under the motto “Enjoy the real taste of good eating”. It opened its first store in Namba, Osaka in 1945 and has since opened multiple stores around the Kansai region of Japan, but where better to enjoy the real taste of good eating than trying them in their home city?

We ate our steamed pork buns at 551 Horai (Fukushima Store)
