SUWA SHRINE was establlished in 1625,Nagasaki’s Suwa Shrine is in fact three shrines in one,including the Suwa shrine, the Sumiyoshi Shrine, and the Morizaki Shrine. The Shrine’s modern history is strongly related to the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century and its annual festival popularly known as KUNCHI was probably the only such observance which the Dutch residents of Nagasaki’s Dejima were allowed to view throughout the EDO period (1600-1867).SUWA SHRINE is known affectionately to local residents as (O-Suwa sama) and represents a central focus of communal hopes and solidarity.
