This morning, I’m taking a relaxing walk in the beautiful old city of Uji in Kyoto Prefecture. Uji is famous for its green tea, two World Heritage sites, and its connection with The Tale of Genji, the world’s first novel. On this quiet morning, I start near the center of town and walk up some beautiful old back streets to Byodo-in Temple. Heading up some steps, I look down onto the Uji River and walk along Ajirogi-no-michi Street on its quiet banks, before crossing onto To-no-shima Island in the middle of the river. There I find some cormorants asleep in cages! These birds are used for “Ukai” – a traditional fishing method in which people use the cormorants to dive for fish. I end my morning stroll on Asagiri-bashi Bridge, looking down the river towards Uji-bashi Bridge. Uji is such a beautiful place, especially on such a peaceful morning, and there’s so much to see! I hope you enjoy the relaxing ambient noise on this calming virtual tour.
