On the third weekend of January every year, the small town of Higashikawa in central Hokkaido hosts an ice festival. This year was no exception, Join me on this warmer than usual Hokkaido winter’s morning as we walk from the Higashikawa Michinoeki (roadside station) down behind the town hall, past the museum and across the street to Hagoromo Park, the site of the festival every year. Some of the smaller sculptures you will see are made by children from the local schools and the snow (not Ice) sculptures are made by people from the town and local businesses.
At night there is a wonderful firework display that really packs a punch for such a small town.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the festival was scaled down somewhat this year. Other years you will see a large vibrantly colored Ice slide which Is as you can Imagine one of the main attractions for the kids, giant inner-tube sledging, snowmobile rides, organised snowball fights and an ice cafe.
