Today we spend the day exploring Japan’s cutest island – Okunoshima or, Rabbit Island! It is home to over 700 bunnies but the island has a dark history.

The island is a quick 15 minute ferry from Takehara city in the Hiroshima prefecture and is the perfect day trip from Hiroshima or Okayama!

*DISCLAIMER*
We love animals and never want to support and advertise unethical places or ways to see them. We have heard before that the rabbits on this island are really unhealthy/sick, and since they are completely reliant on tourism for food, they often starve during the week (or rainy days when no people visit the island) and them storm people on the busy days, over-eating the food. We have seen videos from pre-covid, of sick looking rabbits storming people for food, and we would not support the island knowing that was still the case. HOWEVER, because of COVID and the tourism in Japan being suddenly non-existent the last two years, they have had to step up to ensure that the rabbits are getting adequate food and water daily, and during our time their we saw people going around the island ensuring all the food and water bowls were filled. We did not see any unwell/sick looking rabbits, and their general lack of acknowledgement towards us shows they didn’t need us. Hopefully in the future, as tourism sparks on the island again they can put a system into place to ensure the health and safety of the rabbits so this type of inadequate reliance does not happen again!
