長野県が世界に誇る観光地と言えば、善光寺でも白馬でも軽井沢でもありません。それは「Snow monkey」と呼ばれる温泉に入る日本ザルで有名な地獄谷野猿公苑です。日本国内だけではなく毎年世界各地から多くの観光客が可愛いスノーモンキーを見に訪れます。
長野県の北部、志賀高原西麓、渋温泉の近くに地獄谷野猿公苑があります。ここに生息する野生のニホンザルは世界で唯一温泉に入る猿として有名です。
1998年、長野県で開催された冬季オリンピックの際、海外メディアがこの珍しいサルたちを取材して母国に紹介したのをきっかけに、知名度が世界的にアップしました。
さらにその昔、1970年には、アメリカの科学雑誌「LIFE」の表紙を飾り。「SNOW MONKEYS OF JAPAN」として、頭に雪を乗せて温泉につかる姿が紹介されました。
寒い日は温泉に浸かってのんびりしたいなぁ･･･それは人間もサルも同じようです。12月～3月ごろまでの間、猿たちは寒さをしのぐために露天風呂に入ります。気持よさそうに温泉につかるサルの表情はとても可愛いです。
のんびりと目を閉じて温泉に浸かるザル、集団で寄り添うサル、熱心に毛づくろいを続けるサル、湯船を歩き周り時にはお母さんザルに甘えて離れない子ザル･･･
温泉に浸かっているサルは、いろんな表情やしぐさを見せてくれるので、ずっと見ていても全然飽きません。予期不能な行動は時に笑わせてくれます。サルの自然な表情って、どこか人間に通じるものがあります。
そして、Snow Monkeyと言われる通り、サルも寒い日に温泉に入るのが大好きです。頭の上に雪を乗せている姿はSnow Monkeyの象徴的な姿です。
サルは温かい日はあまり温泉に浸かりません。春先から夏の終わりくらいまでは温泉に浸かるサルは少ないです。
秋は木の実などが豊富なので、猿たちは森で行動してエサを食べています。そのため温泉に入らないどころか全く見られない日もあります。
やはり冬の寒い日が入浴シーンを見る絶好のチャンスです。急に寒くなった雪深い日はエサが山で採れないため、多くのサルが温泉に集まります。

冬季（12月1日より3月末まで）は駐車場から約2km（入口看板付近から1.6km）、徒歩約30分の細い山道のルートだけです。雪もあって凍結しているのでご注意ください。ほぼ平坦ですが最後に階段があります。駐車場は無料です。
公共交通機関を利用する場合、湯田中駅からバスが出ています。「スノーモンキーパーク」で下車し、そこから歩きます。

Monkeys don’t soak in hot springs on warm days. From early spring to the end of summer, few monkeys are soaked in hot springs.
Since there are abundant nuts in autumn, monkeys act in the forest and eat food. Therefore, there are days when you can’t see it at all, let alone enter the hot springs.
After all, a cold winter day is a great opportunity to see the bathing scene. Many monkeys gather in the hot springs because food cannot be collected in the mountains on a sudden cold snowy day.

In winter (from December 1st to the end of March), there is only a narrow mountain road route that is about 2km from the parking lot (1.6km from the entrance sign) and about 30 minutes on foot. Please note that it is frozen due to snow. It’s almost flat, but there are stairs at the end. Parking is free.
If you use public transportation, there is a bus from Yudanaka Station. Get off at “Snow Monkey Park” and walk from there.
