Taikodani is one of the grander Inari shrines and offers a spectacular mountaintop view.
Taikodani is one of the top 5 Inari shrines in Japan, and while Fushimi Inari in Kyoto is much larger, Taikodani is more peaceful yet still offers a 1000 torii gate tunnel which zigzags to the top. For brevity, in the video this has been cut down to show a few select areas – but takes about 10 minutes to go through. The shrine was established in 1773 to spiritually protect Tsuwano Castle, and commoners couldn’t enter until around a century later.
Tsuwano in Shimane is an often overlooked place but gives a very tranquil and old Japan feel, with its canal lined streets with carp, beautiful cherry blossoms, and laid back atmosphere.
