Vaishali is the place where Buddha preached his last sermon before his Nirvana. The Vishwa Shanti Stupa is erected according to the teaching of the Saodharma Pundarika Sutra (The lotus Sutra) to disseminate love and peace and to create “The pure Land” on the earth.

The construction of the stupa all over the world was initiated by the most Ven. Nichidatsu Fuji Guruji, after seeing the tragedy of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki of Japan, at the end of the World war 2.

दुनिया में पहली गणराज्य होने का विश्वास, वैशाली ने महाभारत काल के राजा विशाल से अपना नाम लिया है। कहा जाता है कि वह यहां एक महान किला का निर्माण कर रहा है, जो अब खंडहर में है। वैशाली एक महान बौद्ध तीर्थ है और भगवान महावीर के जन्मस्थान भी है। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि बुद्ध ने तीन बार इस जगह का दौरा किया और यहां काफी समय बिताया। बुद्ध ने वैशाली में अपना आखिरी प्रवचन भी दिया और यहां अपने निर्वाण की घोषणा की। उनकी मृत्यु के बाद, वैशाली ने दूसरी बौद्ध परिषद भी आयोजित की।
छत्तीस शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व में महान लच्छवी वंश ने वैशाली को शासन किया था|
